I've heard that some schools start their day at 6:00 AM.

No; starting late is bad news for after-school sports, especially on meet/game days.

Why should sports count for more than academics? There's a wide range of scientific studies that state adolescents tend to perform worse on average the earlier their classes start. The CDC, for instance, has said that the biological development of teenagers is not conducive with starting school much before 8:30AM or so.

yes....and here comes a big but

but teenagers would just stay up later and still will be tired for the first few hours of school so we'd just be pushing it back to noon in a few decades.

Not disputing that people would stay up later, but let's face it: high school students don't go to sleep at the same time as elementary school students.

I think 9-3 is fine.  It would almost assuredly raise some GPAs.

Schools should have two shifts which students can choose from, because I'd much rather go to school at night.

Yes. I'm still not too sure how I woke up for HS.

(as someone whose HS started at 6:55 and ended at 1:10 and whose ES and MS started later)

From an Australian point of view, yes, your days start way too early.

Yes, but starting later would affect students with jobs and after-school activities so I'm not sure if implementing later hours would be a great idea.

Yes, though I had religious studies at 6 AM anyway.

It was always 8:30 - 3:30 in HS, with Zero Period (rare) at 7:20 AM and 8th (also rare) ending at 4:30 PM.

More critical and what I thought the topic was about, yeah, starting before Labor Day is utterly bonkers.

I woke up at 5 this past school year. I was fine. Sleeping in is just wasted time.

The words of a person who hasn't gone to college yet or worked an 8 hour shift.

That is way too long.

Kids should start at 6:30am and finish at 1pm. Then they go home and spend more time with their parents. Homework and sports in the afternoon.

What would make you think they would teach for both shifts?

Our teachers don't get paid enough as it is. How would that work with a second set of teachers?
