I keep trying to, but then some of these updates need their own thread headline... this is going to worse-case scenario within the first hour.

Still seems unclear how long this is going to last for.  Trump said that it would be a sustained effort to get Assad to stop using chemical weapons.  But what does that mean?  The bombs keep dropping for weeks?  Or just for one day, and then if/when Assad uses chemical weapons again there's another one day attack, etc.?

It is for our Executive Branch, where Secretaries can find out whether they're fired before they even hear about it.

Blue, can you please stop making new Syria threads?  We already have a 7 page Syria thread, and we don't need to start 5 more.

Are they just going after rebels as retaliation or are they trying to hit our aircraft? Because the second is, uh...not good.

One of the main reasons for my opposition to any strikes against Syria is the lack of plan of what to do about Assad. Russia is firmly behind Assad, helping him with ground support and air strikes, but what's the West plan? Syria is a very divided country, with a lot of ethnicities that loath each other, just like Iraq and Libya, and they would not funcionate under a democracy.

There is no plan.

It is typical thinking from Washington Foreign Policy apparatus. Just throw some bombs and lets see what happens.

Exactly. Let's hope this doesn't escalate to something like Vietname or something. Iraq and Libya were a bit different because no one was defending them, Syria, on the other hand, has Russia. Like Guterres said, Cold War 2.0 could be a hypotheses.

This talk should probably be moved this this thread: https://uselectionatlas.org/FORUM/index.php?topic=143704.0

Or at the very least a new thread in International Discussion

Thank you for putting how surreal all of this is into as concise an example as possible.

Personally for almost 30 years now have been a big backer of the Kurdish National Liberation Movement and the creation of a Free Kurdish State as per the Treaty of Sevres agreement with the colonial powers shortly after WW I.

Unfortunately the US was much less than a "fair weather friend" when it came to the Kurds.... and just a few days ago when Trump announced his "withdrawal plan" from Syria, my first thought was what would that mean to the Democratic and Freedom Fighting forces considering not only the Assad Regime, but also Turkish, Saudi, and Iranian political involvement within the Syrian Civil War.

In the Pentagon briefing, Mattis says this is a one off attack until such time as Assad uses chemical weapons again.  Dunford says the operation is already over now.

Seems to be a direct contradiction of what Trump said earlier.

Glad to know everyone is on the same page on such an important issue. /s

This was totally planned and Russia knew about it in advance. Hillary would have done the same thing btw.

Yup.

Trump is an idiot, but the big issue is Washington's foreign policy establishment. Obama was the only who realized how stupid and pointless this sort of action is.

Clearly our "commander-in-chief" thinks his legal troubles will disappear if he gives Washington the war it wants. And he's probably right.

It's basically a PR stunt and a "stop being mean" warning. We aren't going to war over Syria. Nobody cares about them (sad but true).

And by nobody I mean world leaders.
