in my experience, it's the second option.

in my life, it's been that unless i make people afraid of me, they won't give me basic human respect and spend their time around me undermining me. So people are naturally bad.

people say it's bad that i would report a person i knew dealing pot, or that it's wrong that i disowned my parents and when they get old and need medical care i'll let them die homeless. but if i didn't do these things, then people would take advantage of me and i can't let someone do that. Therefore, i view the world as everyone for themselves

Neither. Both Realism and Liberalism fail to explain some events and trends, and are both right about some things.
