Sinema got so much criticism for campaigning to the center, but she has to be given credit for actually winning when Beto, Gillum, and Abrams lost. Thanks to her, Arizona is the only sunbelt state where the Democrats actually broke through this year. She would have won by an even bigger margin if it wasn't for her liberal activism from over 10 years ago too. Running moderates can work.

I mostly agree, but this take should also acknowledge that liberal Katie Hobbs is currently on course to win for AZ SoS.

It's over! And thank you to McSally for not being a total jack@$$ (comparatively to others in her party going nuts over these close races) and conceding.

All jokes aside, she's been pretty classy about the whole thing.

I tend to hate beetposts, but this one is actually measurable. The gap between Sinema + Green and the SOS race is about 70K votes right now. So Sinema's center tacking probably nets her about 100K in the end over generic D 2018.

Arizona is more to the left than Georgia or Texas and doesn't have as much of a hard right rural vote as either of those. Even with that both of them came remarkably close to winning their races.

Then again Beto was in a MUCH redder state against an incumbent(still worth 1-2 points) in a state that hasn't elected a democrat statewide in 24 years. Sinema probably didn't need to say stuff like no SCHUMA when most people don't even know who Schumer is.

I mean, if Bredesen had been running in a Trump +3 state, he would have won. The issue wasn't that he ran to the center, it was then he ran in Tennessee.

It's not Bredesen's fault the electorate is so out in orbit that it voted for a woman who calls herself a Congressman. Some places are just lost causes.

I'm not sure Heinrich and Udall qualify as moderate heroes. They seem like pretty mainstream liberals.

To be fair to O'Rourke, if you had an election of Beto vs. Cruz in Arizona instead of Texas, Beto would have easily won. Arizona is like 6 points left of Texas

it also elected a democrat as recently as 2006 unlike 1994 and it had a democrat majority delegation as recently as 2012.

2004 with the mid-decade redraw, but still. Anyway, it looks like O'Rouke might do a little better than Sinema if you adjust for state PVI's.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Political_party_strength_in_Arizona

says 5-4 during this decade.

Sinema is a very good speaker. A bit scripted, but I could see her on the national stage very easily.

Oh my bad. Was thinking of Texas

oh yeah. Anyway Arizona is a much less red state and has been open to democrats to a degree. Texas hates the democrat party statewide until 2018.

Like, I could see myself supporting Sinema for president one day. Yes, shes a bisexual non-theist, but maybe our country will be more open to that in 2020/2024.

The problem for McSally is that she ran as McTrump and Arizona hates Trump.

That's why she lost.
