This is seriously the single stupidest thing to get upset over I have ever heard. Like I can not comprehend how people think this idiotically.

It's Halloween. Lighten up a bit. It's one thing to dress as Moana and another to make fun of a race. Can you eat Chinese food if you are not Chinese? Can you learn French if you aren't from France? All this is getting ridiculous.

I was going to post a different opinion, but now that I think of it I think people should wear whatever costumes they want. That way we get to easily see who's a racist douchebag and who's not. Smiley

A little girl who wants to dress as Moana makes her a "racist douchebag"? Huh

As a Norwegian-American, I demand the removal of all viking costumes from stores.  (They're not even historically accurate.  Helmets didn't have horns, dammit!)

And as an American, I demand the removal of all red, white, and blue. All of it.

people who complain about "cultural appropriation" blow my mind. I once saw someone claim that learning new languages was cultural appropriation. It's like they want every race to segregate and never speak each other's language. On a nuclear armed planet, that would go horribly wrong, fast.

I don't understand how these people say they're for social justice when they literally advocate segregation?

There's more nuance to entire cultural appropriation thing than you suggest BRTD. Like, yeah, wearing a Moana costume isn't racist, but there's something a little bit grating about stuff I and other minorities were made fun of for doing when we grew up being rebranded to be more friendly toward white people and suddenly becoming a fad. In the grand scheme of things, it's not a big deal and a lot of social justice types take complaining about it way too far but there's still something of a point there.

Cultural appropriation is a hot topic in some academic circles.  My partner has an interest in the topic when it comes to Pacific Islander culture, and did a video on the topic which has been shown at various venues.

It's just a holiday. Your meant to dress up as whatever you dress up as even if others find it offensive to there culture. If a person wants to dress as a stereotypical Hispanic person with a sombrero or a black person with a Afro let them be. It will expose them to there ignorance to other people if they actually believe said things and they can suffer the societal consequences from it. However there should not be someone to tell someone what to wear and what not to. Overall all the issue to nonsense and I fail to see why this is even being discussed.

Unless you're talking about something intended to ridicule or actually "stealing" culture (i.e, classic rock musicians always stealing riffs from black blues songs and not giving any credit/royalties) the concept of cultural appropriation is stupid.

If anyone wants to know why some people are so sensitive about cultural appropriation in the first place, here's a fun article:

How is that comparable to little girls wearing a Moana costume?

So because a sushi chef did some racist things it's not OK for little girls to dress up as a Polynesian Disney princess on Halloween?

Do not follow.

I have not seen a single Polynesian person complain about little white girls wearing Moana costumes, and I really don't care what self-appointed crusaders with no connection think about it.

I know it's not a direct correlation, but when you have White people*:

- Outright disrespecting the culture that they're "appropriating"
- Liking/fetishizing the food, clothing, etc. while simultaneously disrespecting the people
- Reducing cultures to one-dimensional stereotypes and proclaiming themselves 'experts' rather than learning about the cultures on a deeper level
- Practicing sacrilegious acts on religious figures and symbols
- Basking in fame and fortune while those of the "appropriated" culture get nothing
- Being oblivious to the real challenges that minorities face in general

Don't you understand why some people may get a bit antsy?

*(Really any privileged group, of course, but this is the most obvious context)

To be fair, I do agree that some of your examples aren't examples of cultural appropriation. A Moana costume isn't because it's a costume of a specific Disney character, not a stereotype of Polynesian culture in general. And learning a culture's language is perhaps the opposite of cultural appropriation (since, you know, you're expending lots of efforts in learning the culture, which is the antithesis of cultural ignorance).

But that doesn't mean that cultural appropriation doesn't exist. Exhibit A, the racist sushi chef.
