Two populist Southern Democrat governors who are popularly associated with segregation today, but in office, did more to improve the economic prospects of blacks than just about any politician of their era.

Obviously I know a lot about Wallace from what I've read in the past (specifically about the 1968 election) but I haven't read anything about Maddox. What makes Wallace better?

Wallace actually opposed segregation early in his career, but was willing to embrace it to get power. Awful.

Pretty sure Maddox was more conservative overall, and Wallace, disgusting as it is that he used racism for opportunism rather than out of some kind misguided belief did at least reconcile and he did run as a straight up lefty at first.

Um... Probably Maddox, not taking into account civil rights.

It's arguable that George Wallace was a real-life Anakin Skywalker who became a real-life Darth Vader who later tried to redeem himself.

Both Wallace and Maddox are HPs. I refuse to vote.

There was literally never a time when a lot of Southern Democrats weren't at least claiming that THEY were the ones who were actually helping Black Americans, even during the times of slavery ... I know that sounds absurd, but go back and read all of the "caretaker" bullshlt coming from the mouths of Calhoun and the like.  They can window dress their economic progressivism however they want, they literally tried to keep Black people from being able to enjoy their Constitutional rights and because their fiscal views line up it's okay?  Sorry, I get it, but I don't buy that argument.

Both HPs, I'll pick which one's less bad when I have more time to research.

Maddox, on the other hand, proved to be quite proper on civil rights as Governor.

Maddox was at least a genuine racist who was steeped in ignorance but governed....not as terrible as he could have? Wallace was a shifty opportunist who was decidedly anti-black in office on the other hand. Went for Maddox though it was tough.
