This is the President and the next 4 in the line of succession.

Let's say some huge scandal happens, and it's possible that it will "take down" 4 out of these 5, leaving the remaining one as President for the remaining 3+ years of this presidential term.

Who would you hope to be the last man standing? Who would be the best President?

For me, I think Orrin Hatch seems like the best option.

Orrin Hatch is the one I'm most confident would keep elections around long enough to get rid of him.

Hatch > Pence > Trump > Tillerson > Ryan

Ryan has done more to scare me than anyone else in American politics, Trump not excluded.

-Ryan's just a hack; I don't like him. Nothing he proposes is different from standard Pence fare (except for a slightly looser immigration stance). Picking him for VP was a typical stupid Romney decision.

He's a savvy manipulator of the national political media. The only contemporary figure who has ever been on the same level is Barack Obama. You could count Donald Trump, too, although his extremely hostile all-coverage-is-good-coverage approach is something distinct from the kind of talent that, for example, earns you a glowing interview with Ezra Klein.

But it's more than that. People who acknowledge Ayn Rand as an intellectual or moral influence belong far from the levers of power. I don't view Ryan as a hack; I view him as a thinly-disguised demon. Christians in particular should be very frightened by his vision of the future.

-The Vox guys seem pretty negative on Ryan (for obvious reasons). Yes, guys like Ryan and Rubio are popular in certain establishment circles. But they're hacks. They have no higher political ideology than self-advancement and service to their own donors. Ryan does not take Ayn Rand seriously at all; look at his passionate bailout advocacy back in 08, which Rand would have castigated him for. Ryan wants lower taxes on the rich, bailouts for the rich, and entitlement reform somewhat worse for the handout-dependent than the present system. This is ubiquitous among Republican representatives. I see nothing really unique in this, though I see how Ryan's media influence might scare some leftists. I'm very much accepting of inequality, so I don't see anything inherently wrong with entitlement cuts. However, they make for terrible political strategy, and Ryan's proposed tax cuts are, I think, easily criticizable on fiscal conservative grounds alone. So, while I do see Ryan as representative of a lot of things wrong with Washington, I can't see him as more dangerous than any random establishment politician with the power to persuade crowds. For example, I view Tom Cotton as far more dangerous than Ryan.

At least Newt Gingrich looked at Winston Churchill as a model rather than, I don't even know, Sargon of Akkad?

-Both supported fairly bloodthirsty military strategies in Iraq, so they're not too different in that respect.

A President Ryan would make me very happy. I would probably rejoin the Republican Party at that point.
