Well, I hope that everything resolves itself sooner rather then later, and that there are no further incidents. On behalf of my family, I offer support for Britons at this time Sad

Goodnight, Al.

Blair has confirmed they're terrorist attacks. He's leaving the G8 meeting for the day and going back to London.
He looked pretty upset.

I think any attempt to connect this to the Olympics is pretty much coincidental: You can't put together a massive co-ordinated strike on central London overnight. Clearly with this being the beginning of the G8 would seem to be the more obvious connection - it would appear to be a clear attempt to disrupt whatever negotiations would have gone on there.

Two people have been confirmed dead (not twenty people) but there may be more and an uncertain amount (possibly a couple of hundred) are injured, some seriously, one or two critically.

The remains of an explosive device have been found

Frank Gardner (Beeb's security correspondent, the one that was nearly killed a while back) says that Arab sources think it's probably the work of Al Qaeda.

Chief of the Met (Sir Ian Blair) has said that the emergency plan is in place, is working, and that the situtation is coming back under control.

All Underground services and central London bus services have been stopped.

There's not been a lot of panic; people seem to be taking it stoically.

From the Beeb's ticker:

Rescue operation confirmed in tube tunnel near King's Cross.

Islamist website carries message claiming responsibility for London attacks.

There seems to be some sort of suspension of the Commons at Westminster. Reasons unclear.

All issues relating to the making of cheap political points should be directed to the thread now split from this.

This thread should remain for simply reporting information as people receive it.

It seems to have been confirmed that Blair and the Queen will be returning to London. The remaining leaders are staying in Scotland and, I believe, are supposed to release an official statement soon.

What can I say? Obviously I am deeply disturbed by this.
Strangely, I woke up very early this morning. I never turn on the TV in the morning because I don't have time. Today I did. It is as if somehow I intuitively knew something was going on.

Sometimes the big news breaks in the middle of the night. It was about 3 AM here when Saddam's capture broke.

Do you know what the time difference is between California and London?

8 hours, so obviously noon there is the middle of the night here.

Al, Dave, and the rest of our friends across the pond . . . I'm sorry to hear about the attacks this morning.  Our hopes and prayers go out to you.

Strangely that happened to me this morning as well.  Woke up 4 hours earlier than usual.

Reports say that people are trapped at Kings Cross.  It's horrible to refresh CNN's website and see the only thing change is the number of victims.

Now that is interesting.  I had woken up early this morning as well (2:30am DC time, which is about 8:30 London time), thinking my alarm clock had gone off.

Probably just coincidence, but strange isn't it?

CNN reports that "U.S. law enforcement sources said the British government has said at least 40 people are dead."

Things are eerily quite in London now, still seems to be plenty of movement inside some of the stations, people believed to still be trapped under Kings X, but the police and emergency services are doing a very good job indeed…

Blair is doing exactly the right things coming down to talk with people and see the damage himself, it really is horrible this attack, thank god I don’t think its going to be nearly as bad as Madrid or anything like as horrific as New York, but I think there will be a sizeable number dead as a result the BBC are still sticking with it only being two, I doubt that somewhere around the 20-30 mark seems about right to me, but I’m only in one corner of London glued to the TV…

…who ever did this are in for a big surprise if they think it’ll rattle the brits.
