afleitch, it's hard to make out that thing in your signature, what exactly is in it beyond the US Capitol?

That is acctually a artistic relief of a famous photo of London burning during the "Blitz".  The building in the fourground is St. Paul's.

Ah, gotcha.  It's a bit blurry, I couldn't really make it out.

My deepest sympathies for the people of London and Great Britain.  For all those here who either live in Britain or have loved ones there, I pray for their safety.

I think that attacking the British will turn out to be a big mistake.  It's not for nothing that the British survived the blitz when they were outnumbered and outgunned.  They'll survive this too.

Best of luck to all those British posters here and their families.  We are with you.

IIRC the building behind St. Paul's would be Old Bailey.  It has been a couple of years since Ive been to London.

A question: what do you think the political ramifications will be? Will British public opinion become more hawkish and pro-American, or more pacifist and isolationist?

The effect will be neglible I think. The Anti-Terror Bill planned for later this Summer will be moved up the timetable so that the new arrest powers come in sooner, but that would have happened eventually anyway. What remains to be seen is how this affects the ID cards debate.

In terms of foreign policy, there's no particular desire to go after somebody like NK or Iran before the attacks, and I don't expect to see any uprising for that. The only thing particularly on the military intervention agenda before this was Zimbabwe, and this will have little to no bearing on that debate.

I'm not surprised by Mr. Galloway's knee-jerk reaction. He is trying to make political capital out of a tragedy, and hopefully the British people will see through that.

True. I'd like to contrast what that little wretch said with the complete condemmnation of the attacks by the leaders of the East London Islamic community.

It would appear that there was considerable "price-gouging" yesterday: BBC.

Some less-bad news... seems as though "only" 2 people died on the bus

Its up to 13 now. Wouldn't be surprised if it went up some more in time.

This is awful. My sympathies for all Brits and all people who suffered.

I was at a gig of British rock band Iron Maiden in the Helsinki yesterday. The shocked band dedicated a song for the victims of attacks. A singer Bruce Dickinson said very emotionally that “those motherers who did this will never win.” With supporting screaming of over 10 000-people audience it was a very impressive and touching moment.

Great to see that British members are OK. My ex-girlfriend from mid-90’s lives currently in London as some other people who I know. They all seem to be OK, because Finns haven’t been reported to be killed.

5 homes in West Yorkshire have been raided by West Yorkshire Police in connection with the bombings. One raid is still ongoing.
They've not said where in West Yorkshire yet

All the raids have been in the Beeston area of Leeds apparently.
Police say the raids are *directly* connected with the bombings

Some major developments today; including an arrest, lot's or raids, some controlled explosions and the confirmation that the bus bomber was killed in the blast

The BNP misses the point just like many liberals do. These attacks were not a RESULT of our war in Iraq. The CAUSE of the attacks is the "religion" of "peace".

Police say it looks like all four bombs were suicide attacks. They have identified four suspects; three from West Yorks.

Deport them to the US so they can get the appropriate measure of justice.

However tempting that might be, they all seem to be dead

At the time of the incident I was at Shenzhen Airport waiting to board a plane to Changsha (to see my grandmother) and for whatever reason I was thinking of a terrorist attack. It was almost intuitive. I was shocked when I heard of the attacks. Russell Square is near where my mom used to study in 1997 (I lived with her then). Scary that you go to a place that becomes hit by a terrorist.

Again, i'd like to pass on sympathies.

What the terrorists don't seem to understand is something that is universal within the good people of the UK, as well as America, Australia, etc. They don't understand that we have compassion and we also have guts.

A terrorist may think himself courageous by blowing up a bus they're on. But true courage was seen in Britain many times over the thousands of years of Britain, shown in the Blitz, shown when England was to be invaded by the Spanish, shown during the IRA attacks.

The poms might be awful at sports, but there is one thing no other country will beat them at-resilience. Britain is unique-it gets attacked and doesn't have the emotive reactions that the US has; it doesn't get the nationalistic fevour of Australia, it doesn't blame the government-and it doesn't accept that it will be attacked and not respond. When it responds, it will respond in the wisest fashion of all those attacked, I have no doubt.

I'm not a huge fan of Britain, often. Your weather looks awful and your soaps are sh**te. But the British people deserve our respect, and in times like these, our support.

We might not be living under your roof any more, but we support the mother country down here. We've probably lost a couple of Aussies in this attack, sign that Australians are still in the UK and our ties are close. I hope the ties between our people only grow closer.
