The question was addressed to Averroes, a very thoughtful poster whose opinions I respect even when we disagree - not to some random edgy creep who supports mandatory abortions.

Just one thing I'll say is it does not necessarily mean just "sleeping around". My girlfriend is only with one other guy who lives much closer to her.

Degenerate nonsense being sold to naive young people. When you have an increasing phenomenon of young people struggling to find long-term partners to settle down with, the last thing you want to do is promote a lifestyle that categorically rejects monogamous cohabitation.

I remember attending some dumb woke "Family Dynamics" class a while back, and there was a video about a polyamorous group of 2 men and 1 woman. I was able to see right through the facade, the shorter and less cheerful looking man had been in a monogamous relationship with the woman, the woman cheated, and instead of just admitting she was a bad person the man entered into a phony poly relationship so he could tell himself the woman he loves was not lost to him. But it was just so obvious the woman preferred the other guy.

There probably are a few legitimate and healthy poly communities out there. It's not always bad. It shouldn't be encouraged but it can work very occasionally when jealousy is not involved. But it's often a method of emotional abuse by cheaters who want to have their cake and eat it to, such as the cheating victim in the video willing to live a lie to avoid the pain of heartbreak. It's also used to justify polygamy and polyandry, the former especially a problem in backwards religious sects who otherwise have deeply reactionary social views potentially including death as a punishment for homosexuality. Overall, Lean HP.

My opinion is that bumping this thread after six years was a bad idea.

They're just people, almost always perfectly lovely, who are living their lives. Leave 'em be.

After 6 years it still seems offensive to compare being cheated on in a relationship to a sexual orientation.

How does it count as cheating if everyone in the relation agrees on it and approves of it?

I keep seeing the beginning of this thread title on the home page and mistakenly thinking it's about something interesting.

I voted HP not because I have a problem with polyamory per se (although I take the point that sometimes it’s used as a cover by emotionally abusive people to justify sleeping around), but more because poly people themselves are almost unfailingly the worst. They can’t wait to tell you all about their relationships and what they get up to (seriously, I once had a girl at a party tell me all about drinking the breast milk of one of her partner’s other partners and I was all “…I didn’t ask for any of this”) and will often imply that they’re somehow a higher being who’s automatically less jealous and more loving because they let their partner sleep around. I don’t care what they do but I really need all poly people to avoid me forever.

There's no such thing as healthy polyamory, no matter how many times some members of that community want to pretend "ethical non-monogamy" is a real thing.
