Statement on the SEIU Ad (Made on the 20th): "The Gabbard Campaign in no way supported the creation or encouraged the ad from the SEIU. I will appreciate the support of SEIU in my leadership Campaign. I would not be in this race if I did not think I am the candidate to bring real change to Washington. However, I not allow my campaign to get into the mud. Our opposition is my leadership opponents, but the threat to America is allowing the Right continue to damage America while facing a weak Liberal Government."

May I ask for an extension until this evening?

I really need to get this turn up by tonight, so I'm going to have to say no. But Classic hasn't posted either and your convention will be contested regardless, so it doesn't really matter. Smiley

I'm going to lock the thread now so I can start processing the results; please PM me if you need anything. Thanks!

Turn 13 - The Conventions

Hi, guys! Cheesy

First of all, I'd like to congratulate the ten of you who have made it all the way through the primaries. Each of you have already beaten the odds significantly, and essentially tripled your chances of winning the game as we started out with thirty candidates.

With the results of the final primaries accounted for, three candidates (Young, Goodwin, and Weld) have surpassed the 2,690 delegate threshold necessary for victory and will win their parties' respective nominations on the first ballot. One candidate (Clinton) is yet to reach 2,690 delegates but has essentially already won her party's nomination due to the withdrawal of all opponents, meaning that she will be elected once the delegates of her former opponents are unbound. Meanwhile, two parties (the Nationalists and the Progressives) still have multiple candidates vying for their respective nominations, indicating that two contested conventions are likely to be in store.

This turn, the nominating conventions of all six major parties will be held simultaneously. Due to the layout of our schedule, there isn't one specific set of dates for the conventions, so we'll just use the names of the days of the conventions (Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday) when referring to specific events or ballots. The following will be the convention balloting schedule for all parties:

Quote
You must be logged in to read this quote.

Obviously, no ballot but the first is absolutely necessary, as the nomination of each party is automatically obtained once a majority of delegates is reached. On the first ballot, all delegates are bound, on the second ballot, the delegates of withdrawn candidates become unbound, and on the third ballot, all delegates become unbound.

If you are the presumptive nominee of your party, use this turn to release speeches from endorsers in order to gain an early advantage in general election polling (the first general election polls will be announced at the beginning of Turn 14). If you will likely be in a contested convention, use this turn to contact withdrawn candidates for their endorsements and release speeches from endorsers in order to convince unbound delegates to support you. All candidates should be considering which player they want to serve as their deputy leader, whether it is someone who withdrew from the game earlier or someone who is yet to become involved.

You can release speeches and announcements throughout the upcoming week as you please, though the following is a schedule of when I plan to announce the results of each ballot this week:

Quote
You must be logged in to read this quote.

The above schedule will be modified as necessary, but only if I feel we will need less ballots than all eight listed above. Your final nomination acceptance speeches can be posted any time between now and next Wednesday when I will start Turn 14, though obviously don't post an acceptance speech until you actually win the nomination.

A few final notes:

1. As the primary season is over, endorsement requests of Members of Parliament within your own party are no longer necessary. If you have any additional endorsement requests of public figures or celebrities, please include the requests in posts in this thread instead of through personal message.

2. You will need to choose your deputy party leader sometime this turn. I strongly recommend choosing a player who you know will be active throughout the rest of the course of this game, as the performance of the deputy party leader is vital to your party's success. For those currently in contested conventions, I recommend that the eventual winner choose one of the eventual runner-ups.

3. If you have any questions, feel free to PM me. Thanks! Cheesy

This speech was written by GoTfan (thanks!). Sanders will issue the following speech on Day One of the Progressive National Convention prior to the 1st Ballot.

Bernie Sanders endorses Elizabeth Warren

"I have been a member of the Progressive Party since its earliest days in the 1960s when I organised the Chicago University chapter of the College Progressives. I first entered office as Mayor of Burlington, Vermont when I had been elected in 1980. I served two terms before being elected to Parliament in 1990, and when I was elected as Vermont's second At-Large Member in 2006.

I first became Progressive Leader in the snap election following the tragic death of Paul Wellstone in 2002. It was a hard election, but somehow, I was elected Leader, and I resolved to focus on bringing our Party to a truly national party. We have done immeasurably well, and we must continue to do so.

We have had many fine Leaders over the years, such as the Progressive Lion Ted Kennedy, who fostered our relationship with the Liberal Party. Eugene McCarthy, our party's founder. George McGovern, one of the leading Progressives in a time where there was a backlash against left-wing politics. Paul Wellstone, who gave us one of our best electoral performances in the 2000 election. These men were great Progressives, and have shaped our party into what it is today; a party that stands for the average American citizen! We are the party of the student, the cashier, the office clerk, the veteran, the schoolteacher and more! We are the party of the American people! We do not believe that Wall Street and Main Street should have separate laws! We believe in the right to education! We believe that every person has a right to healthcare! What is objectionable about that?!

These days, we catch a lot of criticism for being too close to outright socialists. It's true, some of us are democratic socialists, including myself, but we are the Progressive Party. What hahave progressives done, even before the formation of our party, that was so offensive to the mainstream politicians? I'll tell you what we did. Progressives got women the right to vote; progressives got blacks the right to vote; progressives created Social Security, lifting millions of Americans out of poverty. Progressives ended segregation; passed the Civil Rights Act, the Voting Rights Act; created Medicare, and passed the Clean Air Act and the Clean Water Act. So when the Liberals, Conservatives, Nationalists, Jacksonians or Independents try to hurl that label at your feet, 'Progressive', as if it were dirty; as if it were something to be ashamed of; something undesirable, I want you to pick up that label and wear it as a badge of honor!

I have been asked many times about who would I choose for a successor. This is something I have had little time to think about; it's something I never really thought about at all. Then, something amazing happened. In 2012, a woman whom I admired for her work in the Parliamentary Oversight Committee and the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, won a tough election in the At-Large race in Massachusetts, overcoming tough Liberal and Conservative challenges. That woman has stood at my side at my top adviser, a source of endless personal and political support. She is my closest friend, and I would like to see her as our Leader, because I believe we have been wasting her talents. Who is this woman? That woman is Elizabeth Ann Warren!

Elizabeth has stood at my side since her election. She has been a very close friend, a source of ceaseless support, and is indispensable to the future of this Party. She has stood up for the average American even before her election, and she has been an educator for a very long time. She was a friend even before her election, going all the way back to when she endorsed me for Leader back in the 2002 snap election.

I can imagine no finer person to pass the torch to. There is no-one more prepared for this role that her. So to those delegates who are no longer bound to their candidates, including my own, if you want to continue the legacy of Ted Kennedy; of Paul Wellstone; of Eugene McCarthy and George McGovern; if you want to raise this Party up; if you want to see Progressive values become the heart and soul of politics in America, then give your support to Mrs Elizabeth Warren!"

Richard Trumka (AFL-CIO) endorses Elizabeth Warren

"My dear brothers and sisters,

I am very proud to be the first one, after our great leader, Bernie Sanders, to speak in favor Elizabeth Warren. My name is Richard Trumka. I am not a member of parliament. I am not a celebrity. I am a third-generation coal miner from Pennsylvania. In 2009, I became president of the AFL-CIO. The first one to talk to you is not a politician. That person is a representative for 12.7 million workers. For teachers. For nurses. For builders. For janitors. For miners. For everyone who works hard to make sure that our society is healthy and stable, and that our future is secure.

We are about to chose who will not just represent this party, but also who will lead the fight for better living conditions, higher wages and more social security for the 12.7 million people I am speaking for. And after Bernie Sanders, whose work I admire and who has done very much for us workers in America, has made his choice public, it was a really easy decision who I will support. Today, the largest federation of unions in the United States of America endorses Elizabeth Warren for leader of the Progressive Party!

Dear delegates, dear brothers and sisters, you might think now that I don't know what I'm talking about, that I am just a worker, not a politician. That is true. I am not a politician. But I know the struggles and the problems of the people who work in and for this country every day better than most of you do. I don't take a political perspective. I take a human perspective. I don't take the perspective of the member of parliament who was born and raised in an upper class family. I take the perspective of  a worker who works harder and harder every day but whose work doesn't get appreciated. A worker who gets told by our political elites that this is a country in which everyone can achieve everything as long as he or she works hard for it, but who knows that this is just a lie. A worker who knows better than all members of parliament that the American Dream is dead for most of us. Such a worker can only support Elizabeth Warren, because she is the person to offer the best perspectives for the common man and the common woman. She was born and raised in a lower-class family in Oklahoma, and she had to work hard everyday to help their parents to make ends meet. Now, she fights in parliament for our rights, for the workers rights, for the rights of those, who have experienced similar situations.

Dear brothers and sisters, I know that, for the most of you, this is a tough decision. But please, listen to the voices of 12.7 million workers. Listen to the millions of voters, who have given more votes to Elizabeth Warren than to any other candidate. Please make sure that our party has a leader which is backed by a broad coalition of citizens, interest groups, unions and politicians. Make sure that our party has a leader that will form a government which will work and fight for the people, not just for the 1%, that has asked for so much and has given so little. That leader will and can only be Elizabeth Warren!”

John Hickenlooper endorses Elizabeth Warren

“Dear brothers and sisters, dear delegates.

During the last months, we have seen a nomination process that was really extraordinary. Every party had a broad field of persons who had declared their candidacy for their party's leadership. Thirty candidates have dreamed of leading their party towards the general election in November. But while the candidates have been fading away in every other party's nomination process, the five contestants of the Progressive Party remained for a long time in the race. Those were our leader, Bernie Sanders, Suzan DelBene, Tulsi Gabbard and Sherrod Brown and Elizabeth Warren. Now, the conventions of every other party is nothing else than a coronation ceremony for Hillary Clinton, Todd Young, Bill Weld and Carte Goodwin. The nationalist convention is a two-man showdown between the same right-winged policies, presented by two different persons. Only the Progressive Party can really call their nomination process democratic and issue-based.

Four candidates have carried their campaigns through the primaries. Three candidates are still in the race and seeking for your votes. Now it is our turn to give our votes for the person we believe to be the best person to make progressive ideas actual governmental programs. I know what this means. I am the premier of Colorado. I strongly believe in our progressive credo, such as freedom, justice and solidarity. But I also know that it is not enough to just demand these values in our policies. You have to know how you can put them into practice, you have to know how to form broad coalitions to back these values. There are currently five progressive premiers who have to do that every day. And three of them, me involved, are backing Elizabeth Warren in her leadership campaign.

Elizabeth Warren has the qualities I have just listed to carry her values into the next government. For us as progressives, it has to be clear that we want to be involved in the next federal government. Not doing so would be a betrayal for millions of people who have voted for us, in order to make their lives better. We can call for a political revolution, but we have to work for it, and we have to work with other parties. Elizabeth Warren is a tough negotiator, but she knows when to make use of opportunities. That's exactly what you have to do as a progressive head of government. And that is exactly what I see in Elizabeth Warren. And the fact that the majority of progressive prime ministers have endorsed her supports my point of view.

This is nothing I have just made up. Elizabeth Warren has worked with both sides of the aisle when she worked together with Prime Minister Barack Obama, who established the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau she has proposed. You are free to accuse her of being a part of the Washington establishment, just like a TV-ad recently did. But the truth is, that Elizabeth Warren has done more to help the thousands and millions of people fighting against the daily struggles of like than any of those fundamental oppositionists have.

It is time for 'A New Beginning'. We are now able to make the political revolution we have called for so long finally happen. We are now able to restore the basic American values – freedom, equality and democracy – and to end the oppression by the 1% we have endured for so long. Dear delegates, please vote for Elizabeth Warren."

Tammy Baldwin endorses Elizabeth Warren

“Dear brothers and sisters, dear delegates,

It is an honor to speak to you today. It is an honor as a person who has never done a great service to our party, except for representing my home state of Wisconsin in parliament, to speak to you at this convention. I'd like to take the chance and to use the opportunity to campaign for a good friend of mine.

It is, at a Wisconsonite, not always easy to be a progressive practicing politics. Our current progressive house delegation consists of two people – my good friend Mark Pocan and me. Ron Johnson, the nationalist at-large MP, has done everything to represent his state as a climate change-denying, sexist conglomerate of white old men. Our premier, Scott Walker, has dismantled our unions and weakened our economy. No, our political environment is not the best in this country.

But not just my political confession has made it difficult for me. All my life, the naysayers have told me that I can't win, because I'm a progressive. Because I'm a woman. Even because I'm a lesbian. And that does not just happen to me, that happens to millions of girls every day. Girls with dreams and hopes, with ideas, with visions, with ambitions, get discouraged and get put into role models they not want to be put in. There is something wrong with our system. Women don't have the same opportunities as men. Where is the equality our founding fathers have fought for? How can any decent person defend the fact that women earn 22% less than their male colleagues? How can any decent person defend the fact that women are still underrepresented in our political institutions? One fifth of the members of the house of commons are female, and just two baronesses in the house of lords. And one of them, Sarah Palin, has been a shame for the whole feminist movement, who tries hard to improve the situation of 50% of the population in this country.

This is nothing that we should be proud of. Also the fact, that LGBTIQ teenagers are four times more likely to attempt suicide should make us feel ashamed. This is a development rooted in the discriminating policies and statements conservatives and nationalists have produced, and in the unconditional looking away of the liberal party. Premier Pat McCrory should be ashamed of himself, regarding to the damage he did to the LGBTIQ people in this state. We need a re-thinking within our society, but we also need a government who shows solidarity to those who feel left behind.

I am proud to endorse Elizabeth Warren for leader of our party and for prime minister of the United States of America. She will lead our fight against group-based enmity, such as misogyny and homophobia. We have to encourage our little girls and our LGBTIQ teenagers to do and to become whatever they want to, and a prime minister who always has fought for women and gay rights, and who has not changed her mind on the issue multiple times would be the best person in order to do so. That's why I aks the delegates today to not just vote for Elizabeth Warren, but also for inclusive and for really progressive values.”

Mark Ruffalo endorses Elizabeth Warren

“I am proud to be a progressive. I am proud to be a progressive, because no other party has had the fairest and most democratic nomination process in our political landscape. I am proud because progressives work together on solutions instead of just fighting each other. And I am proud because this is the only party that has understood what dangers our society will have to deal with in the future.

The climate change is a growing threat. The damage it has already caused is barely nameable, just as the damage it will cause in the future. For too long our government has tragically ignored this fact. For too long, a minister of energy, a motivated climate change denier called Mitch McConnell, had jeopardized the future of our planet, the future of our children and the future of mankind. He has never talked to a Californian who has to save water because it is not clear how much will be there in a year, or in a decade, or even in a month. Instead, Mitch McConnell has accepted nearly $2 million donations from oil and gas companies. He doesn't represent the interests of the common man or the common woman. He is a puppet on a string, controlled by billionaires and lobbyists.

The first one to make this an issue was Elizabeth Warren. Unlike Mitch McConnell or most of other liberals, conservatives, independents and nationalists, Elizabeth Warren represents those who have been ignored for too long. She fights for the janitor who barely makes ends meet. She fights for the young woman who does not get paid appropriately. And she makes the climate change a top issue of her leadership campaign.

I admire her. And I admire the vision she has created for our country and for our planet. She as worked out a plan that does both provide a healthy planet through climate-friendly energy sources and a socially acceptable labor market. She is talking about transferring jobs from the fossil sectors to the new renewable energy sources she wants to promote. Her plan is the most long-sighted and the most roofed plan I have ever read.

And what do other parties say about climate change? We are hearing just lip services from the liberals, silence from the jacksonians, blind marked ideology from the independents and both the conservatives and the nationalists will, no matter if the elect Cruz or Ernst, have climate-change deniers as their leaders. This is not a game, folks! This is the future of our planet. Anyone who ignores this scientific fact, anyone who ignores this growing threat for us and our planet, is certainly unfit to serve as prime minister, and thus, the only one who is qualified for the job is Elizabeth Warren.

My name is Mark Ruffalo, I am an actor, I am concerned about the future of this planet, and I wholeheartedly approve this message. I look forward to cast my vote for Elizabeth Warren, and I encourage you to do so. Thanks!”

Are players who dropped out able to release their delegates to a candidate?

Sanders' delegates will be unbound on the second ballot.
