Left wing against
"Retail workers are workers like any other ones, and so, they have the right to rest weekly in the same day in which their relatives and friends are resting too. It is not good for a person to take Monday or Tuesday off when all the people of his/her social circle take the Sunday off."

Right wing against
"We need to keep our Christian traditions alive. God said that we have to take off one day per week. We should not only stop working but also stop shopping."

Left wing for
"We live in a secular society, and so, religion should not impose rules. Besides, shops used to be closed on Sunday when the most of the women were housewives, and they were able to make shopping in the weekdays."

Right wing for
"The market allocate the resources better than the state does. So, the state should not decide when the private shops will stay opened or closed."

Right wing against/Left Wing for

I think the stores should open open up around 1:00 if possible. Makes for a nice day after church in town and lets me get errands done.

I do most of my weekly reading on Sundays, so I'd be a hypocrite to impose "rest" on others. Also Sunday tends to be when I buy cigarettes (because of aforementioned reading).

I used to be against for both left and right, but now I don't really care so I guess I'd be for, with the caveat that the left-wing against argument still appeals to me to a certain degree.

Nobody is forcing you to shop or work on Sunday, why must you force your choices on other people?  Too many BRTDs in this world.

This is a question for debate?

Except on the real world, we are forced to work on Sunday if your employer says so. We don't exactly have the option not to work or work for ourselves all the time. That's simply an unrealistic line of thinking.

Precisely. You can play this card with any proposed labour law. The relevant question here isn't choice, it's what we are or aren't willing to let employees deal with.

Alas, I fear opponents of consumerism (both left and right) are fighting a losing battle. I'm going to lean anti-ban with some restrictions - I think it's helpful for familal strength if people have a shared day of rest, and am uncomfortable with throwing families to the wolves - unlike the radical anti-family conservatives around here, I guess

If Jews don't want to shop on Saturdays, they should not shop on Saturdays. It is really that easy. Apart from being totally unfeasible, I would also find it to be very undesirable to have Western European shops close their doors on Saturdays. There is no need for that either. Non-Jews don't even have to keep shabbat (in fact, doing so is halachically forbidden).

In Israel, I am for fixing this on a municipal level. I see the case for shops being closed on Saturdays in very religious places, but it is bizarre if the same rule is being applied in Tel Aviv.

But you're not forced to work at a place that requires you to work on whateverday.  If working on Sunday is a such a big stinking deal, don't do it.  Why must you punish everybody else?

Another left wing argument against it is it hurts small businesses. Basically if a business can be open 7 days a week small businesses will have to invest more money to open an additional day but the increase in business won't be as much since people will shop less on the other six days. But big chain stores can easily handle the opening on another day, so if they're not open they cede all competition on that day, so they may have no choice. At least that's the argument most anti-Sunday liquor sales Democrats in the Minnesota legislature used.

Anyway left/Moderate Hero. I think hours should be restricted in many cases (like maybe only something like noon to 6PM), but not banned outright. One case where I do support this is holiday shopping, I'd favor a ban on all Black Friday sales starting on Thanksgiving and most stores being open on Thanksgiving or Christmas.

Where will Jews have dinner on Christmas?  Why take all that money out of poor Chinese people's hands?

For. The economy would crash if we eliminated 52 days of heavy consumption from the year. If you don't want to work on Sundays, talk to your employer.

Right wing for.  I would argue that such laws violate the First Amendment.
