http://www.bbc.com/news/world-africa-27424064Meriam Yeyha Ibrahim Ishag, a doctor from the Sudan was sentenced in Khartoum yesterday to 100 lashes for adultery, in this marrying a Christian man, that Sudan's incarnation of Sharia Law does not recognize, and a death sentence for apostasy, as she claimed she is a Christian, which is also illegal in Sudan. As she is eight months pregnant the death sentence will be delayed until two years her child is born.
Amnesty International's Sudan researcher Manar Idriss, castigated the sentencing, saying that "Apostasy and adultery shouldn't be considered crimes at all, let alone carry the death penalty. It is a flagrant breach of International law."
The BBC's Osman Mohammed, meanwhile, in a report from Khartoum stated that death sentences are rarely carried out in the Sudan.
Outside the Courthouse there were small non-violent groups of protesters, some of whom supported Meriam, and others who supported the sentencing.
