Toomey barely won in 2010 he probably couldn't even carry PA if he was the nominee or VP.

Pros: Sterling economic conservative credentials, has a Senate record, he's the whole "package" for wings of GOP (fiscal, defense, social conservatives love Toomey), could play in Rust Belt/Midwest and Pennsylvania, vetted by conservatives

Cons: Too conservative to be on ticket? Could he put Pennsylvania finally in the GOP ledger? 2013 support on gun control could cause revolt among conservatives (they claim he's a RINO now), relatively uncharismatic.

Maybe in 2020 as the establishment candidate, but in 2016 he's too untested and already facing a challenging (but not uphill) battle for re-election.

I mean, I like Toomey, but he needs a couple years to put his feet in the presidential waters before he runs. He's not a guy that can just vault himself up there.

A member of the Tea party caucus would be the establishment candidate?

He promoted gun control (of sorts), he clearly can't run as the Tea Party candidate anymore.

How do we know that the Tea Party is not taking over the Republican party?

Toomey could potentially bridge the establishment and Tea Party wings. I agree 2016 is just too early though. He doesn't have the rockstar pizzaz Obama did to allow him to run as a first term senator. There are just too many other options at this point for Toomey to gain traction.

Toomey's recent support for gun control would also haunt him. He'd have a better chance of it being at least somewhat forgotten and forgiven by 2020.

Toomey is not even broadly popular in PA every poll I've seen has had his approval rating in the mid to low forties with the rest either disapproving or not knowing who he is. He's just another invisible Senator.

He has a background that may be too conservative for moderates, while his compromise on gun control may make him look too squishy for conservative voters.

He hasn't developed a national profile the way Rand Paul, Kelly Ayotte, Marco Rubio and Ted Cruz have. I follow politics pretty closely, and I don't know what he sounds like.

He comes from a valuable state, but he doesn't bring anything else to the ticket. He'll be a white guy in his mid 50s, so he doesn't offer the diversity the way Kelly Ayotte or Marco Rubio would.

He is a Harvard grad but he doesn't have the reputation for intelligence that Paul Ryan or Mitt Romney had. He doesn't have a major policy victory like Scott Walker. He doesn't have an inspiring background like John McCain had.

He is an FF, but only because CountryClass is wrong as usual. He has never voted against 2nd amendment rights.

Wait, is this the only reason you like him?  Because he briefly worked with Democrats on one issue?
