Just to clarify, one needs not have a job, only giving the impression of looking for one, to ask a father, but one does need a job to ask the woman? Just trying to get a grasp on the social customs of Oklahoma.

Asking the father does not start the road to the wedding.  The proposal does.  Asking the father only gives the green light to asking the girl.  It is preferable to have a job for both events, but the impression of actively trying, I'm hoping, will suffice.  It's more important that I have a job for the proposal so I can pay for any part of the wedding I am asked to.  Financing the wedding is normally the bride's family's responsibility, but I don't want to assume that.  More than that, I need to show my bride-to-be that I will have the ability to take care of her financially as well as emotionally, spiritually, physically, etc.

Then that really sucks because Bushie was really counting on that money.

I'll give him a week max before he asks her. He won't be able to contain it.

If Bushie and his parents can hold a "family meeting" to discuss their diets, then surely Alison and her parents can have such a meeting about her marital status?

Anyway, onto a different topic.  I am having dinner with my girlfriend's father tomorrow evening.  That can only mean one thing.  I am going to ask her father for his daughter's hand in marriage.  I am plotting my question to her, as well.

That you're just having dinner!?! Huh

i'm fairly certain he won't say no. Allison is old goods by Oklahoma standards, and I'm sure her parents are just itching to get her married off as soon as possible.

I did (sorta).  Fiancee's 1 and 3 had no father, so I had to ask the mother.

Interesting... also, wait there were three? I was sort of trolling there. I didn't know there were three. Susan, the mispelled name, and...?

Bushie, have you ever heard of an Oklahoma father who refused a suitor's request to propose to his daughter?

Am I the only one who finds the asking the father for "permission" to marry the daughter in 2014 very disturbing?

No, but not that's something I object to in particular. See these people:

IF that happens, and that's a very big IF, then I will not propose to her, yet.  I respect her and her father too much.  However, her father and I are good friends ourselves, so I don't see him saying no.

This is conservative Christian culture.  Yes, you can still be conservative in 2014.

From what I've gathered, the standard practice amongst almost everyone I know who's married is to ask, and then after they say yes let their parents be the first people to know they got engaged. I've never once heard of someone asking the other person's parents first. Also what if the woman asks?
