I was going to vote FS, but Senator Rockefeller's recent remarks changed my mind. HS

I was about to press HS, but in the last second i realized that District 12 is suppose to be the post-apocalyptic West Virginia, and I can't vote HS for Katniss' and Peta's home state. Freedom State it is.

Not perfect, but I've always liked it and enjoyed all the time I've spent there. There's a great melancholy to a lot of the state, but it deserves better than what it gets from people. FS.

Take away Indiana and there's quite a telling pattern here.

I only see the pattern if you take away NJ/AZ/MO as well.

Hunter S. Thompson would have made some marvelous observations, no doubt. Maybe he did.

It's bad, but not as bad as the awful raccoon-skinned hat guy with a musket that the university uses as its mascot. It's also no pastoral paradise despite some pretty scenery. And Morgantown isn't bad.

Narrowly a FS for historical and aesthetic purposes, but the current political and social culture is godawful.

Obviously has the worst quality of life of any state.  Highest disability rates, lowest rate of college graduates.  Lowest rate of labor participation, etc... Lacks the vibrant culture that other poor states (Louisiana, Mississippi) occasionally have.  Decades of mining and chemicals make it a toxic place to live and stands no chance of attracting employment outside of those industries.  Their coal mines are the oldest and most expensive and will steadily disappear.  No major coal mining company is HQd in the state.  Lacks the skills or will to change anything.  Doesn't have Sen. Byrd to drag in government jobs anymore.  Aside from the eastern panhandle, it is clearly a doomed state.

Certainly worse than Texas or New Jersey.

No state is "certainly worse than Texas" with the possible exceptions of Arizona, Oklahoma, and Mississippi- and even then you can argue that Texas is worse because there's more of it to be awful.

But, yes, West Virginia is obviously far, far, inferior to the unappreciated glory that is the Garden State.

One of the most underdeveloped states in the union dependent on one sole industry and a complete lack of a skillful and educated workforce.
