With all the threads about gay marriage, I figured I would ask about marriage in general. What do you think of marriage? Do you view it as a positive or negative institution? What if anything would you change about it marriage as it exists today?

Also, can we please not turn this into another thread about gay marriage? We have plenty  of threads on that and I'm looking more for your views on the institution in general anyway, not the particulars of who gets to be in it.

Oh my well not horrible but it doesn't always have freedom. This could be a fun can of worms.

A nice way of showing people's (ideally forever, but sadly not always) commitment to each other.

A wonderful ideal to strive for, though it's important not to confuse ideals with reality.

Freedom institution.

I promotes stability and reduces poverty. My only major concern about marriage as it exists now is the relatively lax attitude both our culture and legal system take towards divorce.

Legalized slavery. It's been a way for prude women to con their boyfriends into a life of monogamy and servitude for thousands of years. Disgraceful that we still keep it around.

Sorry, I'm realizing just how cryptic that comment was. Tongue What I mean is that marriage is obviously a good institution, born from one of the noblest human ideal (ie eternal, devoted and uncompromising love). Actual married couples can hardly live up to this ideal, hence why public policy needs to tweak it somewhat (divorce and all). But anyway, both the ideal of marriage and the social/legal institutions are generally good things, though the latter can become bad if constructed poorly.

This.

Where is the freedom in only sleeping with 1 other person for the rest of your life?

Sounds like a legal prison to me.

The government is now involved in your relationships.

You can (for most people) only sleep with 1 person for the rest of your life.

If you divorce, the other person gets half of everything no matter what, if anything, they brought to the relationship.

Your spouse now controls you.  He or she can now become a lazy moocher, nag you to death, and now weigh 400 lbs and your only options are 1:  Put up with it  2:  Get divorced and they get half your stuff.  And don't start with prenups as they can be thrown out.

You will acquire your spouse's debt even if you didn't know about it.

I respect it of course, but you straights have f-cked it up. Cheap Vegas weddings, remarriage after remarriage, quickie divorces, marriages for inheritance, money, passports, magazine deals, forced marriages, shotgun weddings. You should be ashamed of yourselves.

Freedom. It's too bad that it happens less often and couples live together unmarried.

I thought marriage wasn't a big deal to you?  Or is marriage only important for straight people...?
