Cory wants to make a super species through genetic engineering, weeding out inter alia that gay gene he assumes exists? Assuming that I have one (and males were the bods to whom I was attracted from day one thinking back on it), I guess that means I would not have made the cut, and the planet would be Torie free. Somehow that program does not thrill me too much. I can like hanging around, hectoring the youngs, and in fact all generations come to think of it. Smiley

A.) Are you saying you chose to be gay? Or do you think there is a social reason for homosexuality?

B.) "Made the cut". Stop implying an "exterminationist" ideology on my behalf. I am a staunch supporter of marriage equality and an non-discrimination act for gays. As I literally bolded in my statement, I simply think homosexuality would phase out for sociological reasons, not out of a personal animosity for gays.

C.) Is anyone honestly going to say that how people look doesn't affect life? Why should people have to be "ugly" (yes, there is such a thing, let's not kid ourselves)?

By the way: This isn't something "I believe". It is something that is going to happen regardless of anyone's opinion. I just want it to be available to everyone.

It could help in situations where people's looks make others want to throw up.

Now we want to cull ugly people?  How handsome was Abe Lincoln, who literally almost single handedly saved this nation, and by force of will, extirpated slavery and shoved the 13th Amendment up Congress's ass?  Sometimes it is better to think before pounding on the keyboard and hitting the post button.

You really don't see how horrifyingly dehumanizing your "ideal society" sounds? Really?

It isn't "dehumanizing". If anything we are unlocking the full potential of our human genes. When people say things like "but what about our humanity!" they are missing the point in that we would still be human. There is nothing inherently good about remaining "natural", if anything I find such a view to be extremely limiting.

Tony embracing the messiness and limitations of human nature against the onslaught of "progress"? That's surprisingly conservative.

I can sort of sympathize with Cory in this sense.

I am 5'5 and have made no secret of my dissatisfaction with my height, even though I am about the same height as my parents.

Given that between 65 and 80 percent of height is heritable, and I am not likely to reproduce with a woman significantly taller than myself, it would seem that any future male generations of Beets would also suffer from the same bodily failings as myself.

I can only see three ways out of this predicament.

1. is to change the value that society assigns to height. Currently taller people are more likely to be promoted, to be found physically attractive, to be seen as leaders, and so on. It's possible that this is just a social construction and it could be changed by reform. For instance a redefinition of masculinity and dominance away from physical size.

However, it is possible that this is so deeply ingrained it will never change, or something more innate in human psychology.

2. is to go back to how things were before the 20th century by sharply reducing human freedom. The prize assigned to being tall would not matter because your social role would be defined from birth. This is pretty much out of the question.

3. Genetic engineering. If I had children, they would share my genes and my wife's genes except we would try to insert genes that would bring them up to an average level of height.

Given the quantifiable mental health, lifestyle, and income benefits this would accrue I hardly see how anyone could tell me no.

Beet, I can certainly understand your predicament, but the idea that things like that can be 'so deeply ingrained [they] will never change' and 'innate in human psychology', but that that being the case a path of less resistance is human genetic engineering to control height, strikes me as an odd and somewhat troubling combination of attitudes and priorities.

If Cory's goals were simply to eradicated genetically linked maladies and diseases, I could sympathise with him somewhat.

What he fails to grasp is that genetically altering people would create its own set of problems with which he has no tools to combat.

Perfection in this physical sense is mostly relative and holes form as soon as you start to unify and eradicate anything. It also assumes that psychological and physical development is completely independent from nurture and experience. The way someone acts and is is far more important than what they look like.

It is also an innate aspect of humanity to seek partners genetically different from ourselves because the result of mating (a more diverse set of genes) increases the likelihood of survival. If broad shoulders were eradicated, broad shoulders may become attractive. The goalposts would continue to move forever further away from whatever we decided they ought to be right now.

But let's give in and say you've created the perfect human prototype to which all humans are manufactured (ugh). Have you then really reached a goal? Well, no, because even the perfect human sample is only perfect in regards to the present. A more perfect human would be capable of flight. An even "more" perfect being would be able to replicate itself without the same physical limitations as a human. Or perhaps a perfect human would feel no need to replicate as its time could be better spent further improving society or itself in whatever way. Suddenly what you've created has ceased to be human at all, and then you yourself are outdated.

It's rubbish is what it is. It's a dream that ruins itself when it seems about to come true. If I could make all food taste like chocolate, chocolate would become loathsome and would start to taste less sweet.

Given who is holding the cards, I'm skeptical of any positive outcome resulting from unfettered genetic engineering. I'm reminded of Genesis' Get 'em Out by Friday: "It's said now that people will be shorter in height, they can fit twice as many in the same building site, they say it's alright.."

Of course this is all bordering on science fiction, so I can hardly hold someone's optimism against them.

Anyone seen this film?:

It's pretty good.  Very fitting with Cory's chilling, cold vision of a dystopian two-tier society.  I recommend it.

Cory's taken great pains to explain how he believes his vision differs from Gattaca, but once one finds oneself in the position of having to do that in the first place, it's probably time to reconsider at least some of one's views.

Either we're prudes or we engage in circle-jerks. It can't be both. Pick a side; we're at war.

To be fair, a circle jerk composed of prudes is likely to be a very dull and stilted affair.

Bumped in light of this quote:

Kill yourself (and the person who gave it to you). It's what any decent person would do.

Beyond being a bit out of date on how treatable the disease is these days, Cory is indeed advocating first degree murder as an ethical and decent act. He just pounds the keyboard without much going on upstairs, and/or is a troll, and/or a sociopath. It's troubling.

This goes out to right-wingers who fear the oncoming leftist dystopia; your enemies are not Socialists, or atheists, or collectivists.  Your enemy is here.  This ^ guy.  This is the definition of a dangerous lefty.  Cory and his ilk.
