Pretty simple, should the DC NFL team change their name to something other than Redskins because some people find the name to be an offensive slur?

Congress and the DC city council and such have basically said yes, various activist groups say yes, the NFL commish and the owner Dan Snyder say absolutely not.

I tend to lean no, but I really don't care one way or the other, it is a distraction.

it's confusing when you switch the poll question from the thread title like that.

Yes, of course. It's a disgusting racial slur, it's a name explicitly picked because it was a disgusting racial slur, and it is representative of an ugly period of racism and segregation in American sport.

Of course they should as it is a disgusting racist slur. As for suggestions for a new name, I liked the suggestion of the Red Tails to commemorate the Tuskegee Airmen.

That would be good. Or just change it back to its original name (the Braves) if you insist on naming a team after Native Americans.

Yes, of course they should change it.  Anything to knock a division rival (and their turdwaffle owner) down a few pegs.

Oh, and it's of course also a disgusting racial slur, but that is very much a secondary consideration in my mind. Tongue

It's a racial slur that's exploited to make billions of dollars. You're a total HP if you say no.

I think they should.  I would if I owned the team.  I don't think anybody should force them to change though.

Yes of course, it's a disgusting racial slur, just as the Cincinnati Bengals is offensive to tigers, the Indianapolis Colts and Denver Broncos are offensive to horses, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers is offensive to pirates, etc.

To be fair the Buccaneers aren't as offensive as they once were:

On the other hand, the old logo might have led them to be the NFL team outside San Francisco with the most support from the LGBT community, so in that respect it was multicultural. Wink

If it were the Cincinnati Bengalis you might be able to make a comparison.

The Bullets changed their name for less, so why not. They ought to anyway, perhaps in time and new ownership they will.

If they want to keep a Native American name, they should sponsor a reservation and change to that tribe's name.

Washington Choctaws or something like that.  Or pick a tribe currently or formerly located near DC.

I really don't understand why people defend this team name.  You can name your sports team almost anything you want.  There's no reason to pick something racist or offensive or mean-spirited towards anyone.

It's really remarkable the extent to which native American culture is not valued by people in this country.  Would anyone accept a team called the "Manhattan Kikes," or "El Paso Wetbacks," or "Weehawken Wops?"

On the other hand, the old logo might have led them to be the NFL team outside San Francisco with the most support from the LGBT community, so in that respect it was multicultural. Wink

Come on, if the Bucs mascot was supposed to be gay, it wouldn't be a knife in his mouth...

Does "redskin" actually refer to body and face paint as opposed to skin color? Don't suppose that it matters. "Redskin" to me is exceedingly dated - it's really not used in any other context than to refer to the team, but does certainly have an offensive connotation.

When I did my poll on this not long ago I wondered if there would be a difference between sports fans and non-sports fans, and there really wasn't. I grew up watching football, so to me it's a word that refers to the team and the team only.

Is this below offensive? I can't say that it is, so I guess it depends upon where the line is.

No, but if people of Viking descent had a history of discrimination in this country, it might be.
