I did a similar, stupider one a year or so ago, but another website inspired me to create this one, which has his 11 options.

Monday after the Super Bowl for absolutely certain (parties should be expected to last well into the wee hours on Monday morning with Monday being a day when everything just shuts down), election day, and Christmas Eve / Christmas Day, of those listed. There is no reason to have some of the holidays we have, like Columbus Day or MLK Day, and not have the Monday after the Super Bowl. Let's get with the 21st century, please.

When the Steelers won their 5th after the 2005 season, 3/4 of the people either took a sick day or a personal day that Monday (called in in advance, now) or else were zombies that Monday. Now come on. It's a holiday. Everybody just go home, stay in bed, or go to bed if you haven't. Smiley

Where is the NOTA option?  I used April Fools Day as a replacement.  We should get rid of Columbus Day (because he was an idiot) and Christmas (or at least rename it) as Holidays too.  How about Earth Day or some new "science day" as a replacement for Columbus Day?

We have a moral obligation to make Election Day a public holiday.  That's obviously the first one we should add.

As a practical matter, the Monday after the Super Bowl and Christmas Eve ought to be holidays too, so I voted for those three.  I do worry that enshrining the Monday after the Super Bowl is a little close to government support of one particular industry, but goddamn it the Super Bowl is a de facto national feast day in the vein of Memorial and Labor Days, so we may as well recognize that fact.

If we're going to be memorializing attacks on American soil, 9/11 really ought to get in line behind Pearl Harbor and Fort Sumter.  But I guess it's not the worst idea if we collectively decide that workers need more time off in this country.  A Hispanic culture day might be workable, too; certainly better than Columbus Day (which shouldn't exist).  But there isn't really a good candidate for a date so far, and no Cinco de Mayo doesn't count.

I can't imagine supporting any of the other alternatives on this list.  I would support taking Earth Day off, but obviously we're into pipe dream territory there.

Election Day, Christmas Eve, Patriot Day.
Those and I also put the morning after the Super Bowl, as a lot of people are in no condition to work.

Election Day should be a holiday; none of the others should.  We have enough holidays already.  We can't just keep adding more.  In the case of Election Day, we should probably have elections over a full seven-day week, and not designate a single day as Election Day.  That way, there would be no need for a public holiday.  One could argue that this has already been realized by early voting in many places (though in Tennessee, for instance, the opportunity to early-vote on a weekend is limited to 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM on Saturdays), in which case it might not even be necessary now.

Election Day should be, without a doubt.  It would help increase turnout, but it's the ony proposal I would support for such a purpose.  I voted Patriot Day too, although I'm not so sure about that one.  I could take it or leave it, I guess.

My vote goes for the anniversary of the worldwide elimination of smallpox. It's easily one man's top scientific acheivements. Extremely underappreciated.

Election day and the day after daylight savings time as civic holidays, and patriot day to honor those hurt and killed in the 9/11 attacks and subsequent wars.

Religious holidays should be protected at the individual level (employers must give workers time off for religious holidays).  But that's probably the extent the feds should have in religious holidays.

I absolutely hate the idea of Patriot day.

I normally wouldn't be against the addition of a holiday, but as has been mentioned, Patriot Day is too soon after Labor Day.  So, if we added Patriot Day, we should remove Labor Day.

I want to add a write-in holiday - Good Friday, as a religious holiday.  Easter is already on a Sunday so that's a defacto holiday already, but we used to get Good Friday and Easter Monday off school when I was in the 1st-3rd grades, I believe.  We should go back to that.

No, I hate the idea of it as a holiday because I don't want a tragic day celebrated by a bunch of advertising bull$hit and barbecues.

Halloween, the Monday after the Super Bowl, and a day celebrating Hispanic heritage.  These are important in my mind because they are important secular, cultural institutions.  Who doesn't celebrate Halloween and who doesn't watch the Super Bowl?  Plus, considering we have a Black History Month and MLK Day, which are largely celebrations of black contribution to the country, I don't see why Hispanics shouldn't get a day.  And no it should'nt be Cinco de Mayo.

Election Day for obvious reasons.

I thought about Xmas Eve... but the government sucks the Christian's c**ks enough as it is.

Wouldn't it be easier AND make more sense to just do the Super Bowl on a Saturday instead of a Sunday?

The first person to say "tradition" gets punched in the dick.

Oh yes.  Absolutely.  It'll never happen, though.

The NFL is a Sunday sport, with only an occasional Saturday.
