We need not ask "Who is John Galt?" That time has not come. What we need to ask now is "Where is Hank Rearden?"

A deeply disturbed person with some interesting ideas that her followers have completely misinterpreted.  She gets bonus points for rejecting religion.

options 1 and 2.   she made a legitimate critique of collectivism, but what she wanted to replace it with is awful in significant ways.

If I ever got a chance to protest Paul Ryan while he was campaigning in 2012, I wanted to come with a sign that said:

JESUS' WAY IS TRUTH
RAND'S WAY IS LIES

The problem with Rand wasn't her legitimate critiques of Communism, but her hilariously immature response to it. Her reaction to Communism was to essentially become the cartoonishly evil caricature of capitalism by the Communists of the era. This basically says it better than I could:

The first half of that quote seems to be some sort of severely ahistorical satire on Genealogy of Morals.

It serves the analogy, at least. I felt it would rob the latter half of context if I omitted it. The entire series of articles is worth a read, though, if you find yourself with an hour of two free for Rand-bashing.

Ah, I see.  I guess it does show what Rand what reacting to.

I saw a good panel discussion on Ayn Rand at Freedom Fest aired on C-SPAN a couple years ago.

I agree very much with Whole Foods founder John Mackey's comments (7 minutes in).  Orson Scott Card has some interesting things to say as well.
