Right now I think the Dems need a victory though to ensure that we don't sink into a one party state. Plus, at the moment, it's 52-48, and that's a bit much. If it were even 50 I could consider it.

Yeah, if the Dems don't win an election where both candidates are Republicans than I don't think they're winning an election until the 1900s.

fair enough

So if it's 50/50 we're giving it to Chase to get some variety?

I think if it's 50/50 Chase can have the PV, but Fenton gets the EV.  IIRC Cathcon voted for Chase, and he typically subtracts his vote if it's a tie, so that makes sense to me.

The 1868 United States Presidential Election
The 1868 election would be one of the closest in history. With the end of Reconstruction, Democrats recaptured the South and with it recapture the electoral base they'd lacked since 1849. With the nomination of two former Republicans and staunch Unionists, they were able to close the book on the Civil War, despite Fenton's "waving of the bloody shirt". It seemed that Chase and the Democrats would take the Democrats to victory for the first time since 1844. However, fate had other plans. It ended up that two slates of electors would arrive from the incredibly close state of Nevada, one claiming a Democratic victory and one claiming a Republican victory. With the election incredibly close, it came down to that state and a bi-partisan commission was appointed to settle the issue. After over a week of quick consideration--a decision needed to be made fast--it was decided in Fenton's favor. Despite Republicans losing the popular vote, they'd won a fourth term in power.

Governor Reuben E. Fenton (Republican-New York)/Speaker of the House Schuyler Colfax (Republican-Indiana) 161 electoral votes, 49.8% of the popular vote
Chief Justice of the Supreme Court Salmon P. Chase (Democrat-Ohio)/Former Congressman Francis Preston Blair, Jr. (Democrat-Missouri) 156 electoral votes 50.2% of the popular vote

Cool write up.  It's nice to have close elections again.

One minor point though...  his name is spelled Reuben.  Smiley

'Twould appear so. Not sure how I got it in my head that it was "Reubon".
