Here we have it, two liberal Republicans (who later became capital-"l" Liberal Republicans) running against each other. As far as I know, no other candidates exist for which someone to cast their ballots. Have at it, folks!

Woo! Fenton!

I can't wait to see how well President Bernie Sanders does in his bid for reelection against challenger Russ Feingold.

Fenton. But this is a very tough decision.

I kinda doubt Chase would pick Blair as his running mate given...well...

Maybe thinking a bit further ahead than need be, but for 72, since that was a weird election, and we're vastly off track, I was thinking the most logical way to do things would be (if Chase wins, which I don't want him to x.x ), have him switch to Liberal Republican, be primaried by Greeley, and then have dems and reps running separately for 3 tickets.

There's also the Bourbon Democrats, who I suspect a lot of the libertarians on this forum would vote for, and Woodhull/Douglass of the Equal Rights Party. So that would make five tickets, six if the Prohibition Party is included. Should be interesting Tongue

Thanks for your input on '72 everyone. I've been thinking about it & yes it will most definitely contain a multitude of candidates.

Interesting that both men are former Republicans - and had been sometimes bitter rivals during the War.  A Chase nomination by the Democrats in 1868 isn't far-fetched, but even in that case the Democrats might well have nominated Blair for VP - being more concerned about balancing out the ticket than anything else.
In this timeline, with Reconstruction a bit more in the background, maybe Blair can tone down his reactionary rhetoric.

That's true and actually he would make a lot more sense if he did that/if reconstruction was in the background.

With as close as this election is I could see a 1876 scenario happening.

Great Smiley  This quite an exciting election!  For my part, I am rooting for Fenton (as many strengths as Chase had, his ambition seemed to have clouded his judgement a few too many times for my taste).

You don't want to write up a whole complex 1876-style scenario? Sad  That would be epic

Wouldn't it be even more epic if Chase won the popular vote? Tongue

Well, not sure if I would be able to vote in this TL (given the voting history), but if I could I would probably vote for Salmon Chase.

Oh yeah, suck it!

Right now I think the Dems need a victory though to ensure that we don't sink into a one party state. Plus, at the moment, it's 52-48, and that's a bit much. If it were even 50 I could consider it.

Yeah, if the Dems don't win an election where both candidates are Republicans than I don't think they're winning an election until the 1900s.
