Sorry for the attention whoring but I've caught quite a severe cold today so my activity may be limited during the next days. Consider this a partial LOA.

Attention Mideasterners: Due to Mr. X's election to the Senate there will be a vacancy in the Mideast Assembly in about two and a half weeks. Mr. X won't take office until the 3rd of January but those Mideasterners who might be interested in an appointment are invited to contact me soon.

I'd like to encourage Njall or OAM to submit put forward their names.  I think either of them would be excellent Assemblymen and would urge Governor ZuWo to nominate one of them should either put his name forward.  I also think they'd both approach governing much as I do.  In other words, in both ideology and style, it'd make the Assembly as similar as possible to the one that The People voted for in November.

I have already received three applications from people with diverse ideological backgrounds. Thank you! Fortunately, there's no need to rush. Smiley

Citizens of the Mideast can now vote on the "Fix the Regions Amendment". After a long and hard-fought debate where just about every Atlasian had the opportunity to form an opinion on the issue I am glad there will finally be a decision made by the people.

Hopefully it'll be a decision to reject the amendment so we can finally put this issue to bed!

First of all, let me state that I have sympathies for this bill. Particularly Mideasterners with a low income would benefit from this proposal. At the same time, with estimated costs of around $2.5 billion this bill would put a considerable strain on our budget, which could lead to tax raises which would either hurt the competitiveness of the Mideast (if taxes are raised on wealthier citizens or corporations) or strain the lower and middle classes (if taxes are raised across the board). Therefore, I'm currently leaning towards vetoing the bill. But feel free to try to convince me to sign the bill - I will probably wait a couple of days before I make a final decision.

I'd like to chime in and suggest to the governor that this bill, while it does disproportionately benefit the poor, also subsidizes energy usage, and presumably fossil fuels. It would act as a sort of reverse carbon credit. I think there are better ways to help low income Mideasterners, such as a sales tax reduction on all goods and services (at a lower percentage obviously), if we're going to spend the money on it.

Fix the Regions Amendment Rejected by the Mideast

9 Ayes (30%) - 21 Nays (70%)

Thank you to all Mideasterners who have voted. It's great to see such a high turnout rate in a vote on a federal amendment! Smiley
