Anyone have any idea what percentage of voters in a November election these days vote for POTUS based on a newspaper endorsement, particularly inasmuch that most such endorsements given their current pathetic quality have about as much persuasive power as one of my dead cats?  Just asking.

Forbes Magazine endorsed OBAMA?!?!? Shocked

To paraphrase JFK, that's like the Osservatore Romano not endorsing the Pope.

Arguably, these kinds of newspaper endorsements are actually gaining in importance. Worthwhile columns are boosted to national prominence through social media, occasionally to a viral extent. It's one thing to have a newspaper say something to you, it's another for a friend to come up to you and say, "hey, have you seen how bad The Wall Street Journal tore Obama apart yesterday?"

Chicago Tribune's actually kind of a big deal, considering it's right-wing bent.

Not flaming.  I'm sure they endorsed in 08 right?  It is his home town, they still want to sell newspapers.  Smart decision.

Now that has a tad of meaning maybe. The slightly left of center Register casts a wide swath over Iowa, and I think is respected more than most papers these days. It was on my grandmother's doorstep every morning in far off Davenport, and she read it first rather than the local Davenport rag.

Actually reading the endorsement, it's poorly written and their argument doesn't really make sense. They must be really butt hurt about Obama not letting their interview be published on the record.

1st time since 72, Des Moines has endorsed a Republican.  That's going to hurt.

After they ran an editorial bitching about it.

You're the one who sounds hurt.

Sounds pretty straightforward: "The Register’s editorial board, as it should, had a vigorous debate over this endorsement. Our discussion repeatedly circled back to the nation’s single most important challenge: pulling the economy out of the doldrums, getting more Americans back in the workforce in meaningful jobs with promising futures, and getting the federal government on a track to balance the budget in a bipartisan manner that the country demands."

Most of the polls show that voters agree with them on these issues.

Their argument boils down to: "Obama saved the economy, but Republicans refuse to work with him, so let's elect Mitt Romney who they will work with."

I gotta agree. I read it expecting more, but there was nothing really there. They say they want compromise, but Obama tried that and was denied. So he stopped in late 2011. But Romney was Governor of liberal Massachussetts so he must know how to compromise, even if he governed as a moderate to liberal Republican. Their rationale is that Romney had to run to the right to win the nomination, but that he'd govern as a moderate. Bad bet on their part.

I think there point is Obama has failed to create partisanship in DC and they think Romney can.  It's really simple.

Pretty lame that their endorsement is made with the acknowledgement that they aren't sure which Romney they'll get.

"if the real Mitt Romney"

But yeah, I'm sure this will hurt Obama.
