Obama and Boehner for shifting responsibility
The Democrats for not touching SS and Medicare
and the GOP for refusing to consider tax increases and not touching military spending....

So pretty much everyone, and EVERYONE knew this would be the result.

I will now attempt to prevent this from being bounced to the appropriate board.

Will the spin of the Super Committee's failure to reach a deal affect the 2012 election?

Probably not.   Oh, well.  I tried.

EDIT: Wait!  Maybe!  I do think the GOP has lost the debt as a 2012 issue to an extent.  Don't know what they have left really.  I suppose they'll fold this latest development into: congress is completely broken and it's Obama's fault?  I don't see it sticking but who knows?

Americans are at fault. We elected these clowns. We cannot have Social Security, Medicare, and the best military money can buy without raising taxes back to Clinton levels. And people refuse to get that. They think the problem is that we gave a million dollars to a scientist to study earthworms. Americans don't understand basic math or the budget process. And they are being misled by politicians who are too scared to tell them the truth. And it pisses me off.

Technically, it hasn't failed until Congress passes a bill to get around the automatic spending cuts.  Once (if?) that happens, I will blame the party/parties which vote for that bill, as well as President Obama if he does not veto it.

Obama has already said he'll veto.

As a Liberal, I don't see it as a failure though. Ideally  you want to rewrite the tax code, but now the Bush tax cuts are likely to expire next year. And cuts to defense are going to happen, the President has already said he will veto any bill.

The media will play up as a failure of government, but as a Liberal it isn't that bad that this committee failed.

FWIW, I voted Democrats, since I'm not entirely convinced they actually want to cut spending much, if at all.

For Republicans, it's more about the amount of cuts and which departments.  I think they're probably a touch too reluctant themselves, and misguided on where to cut, but they get half of a point for the mere fact of pushing the issue.

Obama is a non-entity in this issue.

Both the legislative and executive branches. Both sides just want to kick the can down the road instead of tackling the problem.

Oh my God! - We will have a hollowed out shell of a government!

Can you imagine how draconian and brutal it will be if they have to limit spending to just $42.8 Trillion over the next 10 years...  DC will become a ghost town as the once proud and mighty federal Government is reduced to a vague shadow of it's former self.

The supercommittee didn't fail.  Its real goal was to give Republicans in Congress political cover to vote for an increase in the debt ceiling, without facing a huge backlash from the Tea Party.  In that, it's been quite successful.

Please show me the serious the Dem proposal that came from their side of the committee.

Then tell me how a "compromise" where absolutely no reduction in a year to year expenditure is a fair compromise.

Then explain to me how the Toomey compromise wasn't at least the most serious compromise out of this whole damn process.

I mean Kerry actually thought about building off of that deal, but the Dems eventually just balked and decided that they didn't really care.

This, exactly. The Super Committee served its intended purpose.

The "automatic cuts" will be cancelled before they kick in in 2013; Congress will be able to work on compromise cuts without playing chicken with the debt ceiling and panicking the stock market.
