Reuters is reporting that the Norwegian Army is being deployed into central Oslo. When was the last time this has happened? 1940?

Police suspect there is a connection between the explosions and the shooting.

Who *could* be behind this? Clearly it's not a "lone nut", could it be a "lone group"? I say no, too big. The scale is huge. It has to be organized. If Norway had some kind of huge opposition group that is pro-violence, then that's maybe, but there are none.

Islamist Terror seems the only answer, but why Norway?

Well, they are in Afghanistan. And they are Scandinavians, everybody knows there are no differences whatsoever between Denmark, Sweden and Norway.

The Utoya attack doesn't really make sense in an Al Qaeda context, though. Some socialist teenagers' organization's summer camp? Seriously?
Yeah, I know the prime minister was to attend. Though the way it was carried out it's quite unclear whether he was supposed to be the target.

Also, waddaya mean "bad guys"? Are there any witnesses regarding the planting of the bomb (wait... what's the current word? One huge bomb or several coordinated ones?)

Well, if these two attacks are related, it's all rather confusing; if they were going after the PM, and if they thought he was at the youth conference, then why have the bomb outside his office in Oslo, rather than somewhere where it might be even more dangerous, if you're going to have a bomb at all?  Why were both the shooting and the bomb "necessary", so to speak?

To instill terror and confusion?

Which would fit more with somebody not Al Qaeda or at all Islamist, of course. Not that that means much.

Of course it's just as possible the gunman was supposed to wait for the pm but lost his nerve or whatever. Maybe he was no more of a professional than Waz in Four Lions.

Is it possible that the two attacks are unrelated?

The bombing seems like an Al-Qaeda type event, the shooting at the camp doesn't.

In any event, RIP to all the victims. Sad

The shooter seems to have been pretty prepared having a police uniform and all.[ unless hes an actual police officer who decided to kill a bunch of young people because someone bombed oslo which seems rather unlikely.]

The M.O. tbh sounds more like domestic right-wing extremism than islamists but then again, what do I know?

R.I.P to all the victims o/c.

The Norwegian police now says that it's most likely a Norwegian man they have in custody and that is not Islamic terrorism, but some sort of local terrorism against the government.

I guess it´s some kind of perpetrator from the Norwegian Right-Wing/Nazi scene or an Anarchist, mostly because the Labor Party was the target.

But I cannot rule out that it was a hardcore Left-winger who got crazy over the deployment in Afghanistan and the bombing by a Norwegian bomber-pilot of the Gadafi family in Libya.

We should know more soon.

Given that it's an attack on the foundations of a democratic society and involved killing large numbers of young people, about the only worse thing he (whoever he is and whatever views he holds) could have done is attack a school and/or a creche as well. No, I'm not trying to be insightful or anything, I just needed to 'say' that, because, you know. Reminds me of the Omagh bombing, even if that was obviously very different.

A young boy who was present at the youth camp said that he greeted the killer and that he looked like a Norwegian with blonde hair, 1.90m tall and well-trained.

Doesn't sound like a Muslim terrorist to me, but more like a Timothy McVeigh version with police/military experience gone mad at the government.

A group called "Global Jihad" has claimed responsibility for the attack:

Stoltenberg holds a "Terror will never be allowed to destroy our democracy" speech.

The Justice Minister tells people in the Oslo area to come out and help, and not to use mobile cell phones if not necessary. He also confirms that at least seven died in the bombing, and that one person has been arrested.
