No for both. Allowing high school/college students to carry guns (concealed or not) will probably just increase the risk of another shooting occurring. High schools and colleges are already pretty safe places as they are, and thus there is really no point in allowing students to have guns. Besides, if someone is really crazy and has a gun, it probably wouldn't matter that much to them if they get shot in return or not. Finally, high school students are probably too young to have guns, so that's another reason not to allow them in high schools.

I'd leave it up to the university to make that call.
But generally I'd prefer they not allow it.

And probably no for high schools in general since we're talking about minors then.

Abso-f'ing-lutely not... if there is one place that should be completely free of guns - it's a school or university.

Obviously no for High School.

Anyone remember Columbine?  Or VT?

In general, I say no for high schools, as the students are minors.

At the university level, I think it should be left up to the university administration.  However, I see nothing wrong with the feds (or even state governments) deciding to withold funds from public universities unless they enforce strict handgun bans.  Private universities should be allowed to do whatever...

Certainly minors shouldn't be armed in an educational environment. Considering the amount of drinking and whatnot on college campuses, I'm also inclined to be opposed to students carrying guns. The University is not truly their home and it's likely difficult to secure a weapon in a dorm room. It all sounds like a whole mess of trouble. I trust universities would make prudent policies on their own, if they choose wrongly that's on their hands.

No. Cops should be allowed to have them on campus, I guess.

This is where the NRA-types take it too far. I am a general supporter of gun-rights but places like schools, universities and churches should be gun-free zones.

No for high school, primarily because the students would mostly be minors and even in the case of those that aren't they still have a higher than acceptable risk of minors getting access to the ones they might bring.

Universities should be allowed to set their own policy. Personally I think it would be reasonable to allow it provided the students pass a gun safety course. I wouldn't even mind if psychological examination was required in this case.

No, that would go too far. I don't see a reason why anyone should carry a gun at high schools or universities in the first place. It just poses an unnecessary risk.

This guy is grateful for that way of thinking, Doc.

High schools - no

Colleges - yes, if the school permits it (most won't sadly) and the students have proper licenses/cc permit/training, absolutely.

No -it takes maturity to own and use a weapon, and students (at high school and at universities) in general do not.

No -it takes maturity to own and use a weapon, and students (at high school and at universities) in general do not.

Children in a lot of areas still handle guns all the time when they go hunting, never mind what are essentially young adults. And it wasn't so unusual to have people bringing their guns to school into the '80s in a lot of places. If they don't have maturity now it's because it's been socialized out of them.. But there's really nothing to support teenagers being much less competent by nature or having the gross restrictions on them that they do now. Local areas and colleges should be allowed to make whatever judgment calls they want on this, but I really don't see why guns shouldn't be allowed if maybe regulated in the way concealed/open carry usually is.
