Margin of victory, 152 votes

Votes designated as "scattering:" 162

hmmm....

lol. Conspiracy fail. Those votes are certainly for Palin and others; 'scattering' votes happen in every election with a write-in option.

There was zero "scattering" in the 2007 poll.

Looking at Paulites' penchant for conspiracy theories, no good can come of this.

Palin got less than 1% of the vote, because she's not been counted.

Conspirancy won't help Paul.

I wouldn't be at all surprised if this was stolen from Paul and it's not like I'm a Paul booster in any way. The entire Republican establishment didn't want him to get this win and it was very, very close. It's not hard to steal these things when they're close.

IIRC this was the first year the Straw Poll allowed write in's.

Good result for Paul. I'm fairly happy.

from @FixAaron: "That's right folks, two members of the HOUSE just took the top two spots in Ames, and it wasn't close. "

That's true! is one of them the new Abraham Lincoln? hahahaha

Oh, and Santorum's not quitting. Obviously. Encouraging results for him

This is good news for Paul and Perry in many ways.  Pawlenty, Cain, and Santorum all did well enough to merit staying in the race, so Bachmann can't win Iowa easily with such a diluted field and maybe even Paul can win it with vote splitting.  Because of the lack of consensus in Iowa, South Carolina will probably become the state for the true Anti-Romney to emerge and that plays right into Rick Perry's hands.

There was zero "scattering" in the 2007 poll.

There was zero "write-ins" allowed in the 2007 poll.

what do those results mean? IMO, no one will suspend his/her campaign. Palin may decide against running, and Gingrich could quit. no more.

Pawlenty a distant third? But I looked at MSNBC earlier and they swore it was a race between him and Bachmann!

Wow, Paul really blew it. If he hadn't been such a tool in the last debate, he probably would have won.

I'll take a stab at the top 3:

T1) Bachmann: ~29%
T2)Paul: ~28%
T3)Perry Write In: ~12%
T3)Pawlenty: ~12%

I've heard 16K total votes.  Assuming that is correct.

4,823 – Bachmann (30%)
4,671 – Paul (29%)
2,293 – Pawlenty (8%)

Dang I'm pretty good at predictions.

The percentages are as follows:

Bachmann 29%
Paul 28%
Pawlenty 14%
Santorum 10%
Cain 9%
Perry 4%
Romney 3%
Gingrich 2%
Huntsman 0%
McCotter 0%

If I said I basically called this race, I wouldn't be lying.

A 152 vote margin is not "really blowing it".

Not to mention he got more votes than Mitt did when he won in 2007...so its not really "blowing it."

Ron Paul fans, you'd be a lot better off just pushing the fact that you basically tied for first here, rather than wasting your time making unproveable claims of vote rigging.

Bachmann had just as good a ground game as Paul and is polling better statewide. Her victory shouldn't be surprising.

The only thing that's mildly surprising to me is that Santorum got 4th. And maybe Pawlenty should've broken 20%.

Santorum should still drop out. Pawlenty should join him. Being in 3rd isn't good when you are that far behind the top two. That was an awful result.

This should really be the end of Paul's campaign. If he can't win the straw poll despite having an ideal straw poll support distribution (a mile deep and a inch wide), he certainly can't win the caucus, and he has no organization anywhere but Iowa.

Also, Pawlenty continues to be a joke with no supporters.
