There's a 2024 DNC location thread (link to it here: https://talkelections.org/FORUM/index.php?topic=441145.0), but what about the RNC?

For me it comes down to what the GOP's goals are. If they want to continue the "muh socialism sucks" TPUSA type of business, then Miami is probably the most likely location. Probably would be fitting as well assuming Ron DeSantis or Donald Trump is the nominee.

If they want to go the populist route, however, then they could benefit from holding it somewhere in the Midwest. 3 locations I think are likely include Milwaukee, Detroit, and Pittsburgh. I'd include Ohio but I doubt they need to make much of an effort for the time being.

Thoughts?

My predictions: Atlanta for DNC, Miami for RNC. I imagine Whitmer will still be governor of Michigan in 2024 and will do everything in her power to stop the RNC from holding their convention in Detroit, whereas DeSantis welcomes the RNC with open arms in Miami. Plus if republicans want to flip Miami-Dade, then holding the RNC in Miami could be their first step in their POV. If I had to rank the top 3 locations by possibility, then it would be 1. Miami, 2. Las Vegas, 3. Dallas.

Dallas, Texas would be good

But why not Boston?

Miami, as a nod for their unexpectedly dramatic swing towards Trump in 2020 and as an acknowledgement of how pivotal Florida is for any Republican path to 270. Also, because of Ron DeSantis.

Dallas, Texas would be good

But why not Boston?

Why not? Why would they? The Boston metro anchors a state that is one of the most unrelentingly hostile to the modern Republican brand. There aren't enough party stalwarts in the area to justify rewarding their loyalty with a lavish convention.

If I were the Republicans, I would be gunning for Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Wisconsin is the most likely of all the Biden states to vote Republican in 2024 because of trends in the rural South-Western part of the state. Democrats have much room to fall here. A Milwaukee RNC will invigorate and bolster Wisconsin Republicans. Any path to a GOP victory in 2024 will include Wisconsin (quote me if I'm wrong), and I'm a very strong believer that Wisconsin will vote to the right of the tipping-point state.

I've never been to Wisconsin, though, so what do I know.

I also prefer somewhere in PA, MI, WI. It's highly unlikely that R nominee will be anyone other than Trump or DeSantis, and either of them can win FL handily. Holding RNC at rust belt may give them a boost there, especially DeSantis.

Vegas seems like a fittingly tacky location for today's GOP.

Also, I find it laughable that folks are putting so much emphasis on electoral benefit in considering convention location. I thought the 2016 DNC would've slammed the door on that theory.

Pre-Trump, the situation was such that most large to medium sized cities would be willing to host either of the two major parties' conventions.  But in the bidding for the 2020 RNC, almost every city opted out, because the Trumpified GOP was so politically toxic in cities across the country, that no one wanted to invite them to town.  Charlotte won by default, because no one else put forth a serious bid.

Will it be any different now that Trump is no longer president?  Well, maybe not, especially since Trump himself might run again (though the site selection will presumably happen before Trump has announced his 2024 intentions).  Therefore, I'd assume that the GOP will take whatever they can get.  Many of the cities people are listing here just won't want to bid.

I've got a gut feeling that if the RNC is held in Miami, there'll likely be an afterparty at Mar-a-Lago.

Detroit would be easy to get to for protesters...

The site of the convention means little for the winning or losing of the state by one of the Parties. The RNC chose Detroit in 1980 to accentuate the economic focus of Ronald Reagan (cut taxes, eviscerate unions, reduce regulations, and the jobs will be back)... but Republicans had won Michigan in 1976.

It might be interesting to see whether there is a connection between having a convention in the state and the Party winning that state. The margins would also be interesting. There could be interpretations of conventions and electoral results. The chaos at the 1968 DNC in Chicago certainly did not help Democrats win the 1968 election.

Obviously it would not have mattered whether the Republicans held their 1964 convention in San Francisco, California (where they did) or in Montgomery, Alabama... or in 1972, whether the Democrats held their convention in Miami Beach (where they did) or Duluth.

They'll probably give Pennsylvania another wank.
