Arlington, VA - Southern, though heavily populated by non-Southerners.

Miami, FL - More of a "first world Caribbean" along with a mixture of Tri-State area.

El Paso, TX - Seems more "Southwestern" than "Southern". Can be said of most of TX cities.

Austin, TX - Seems more "Southwestern" than "Southern". Can be said of most of TX cities.

Chapel Hill, NC - Yes. It's just liberal however.

Charleson, WV - More of an Appalachian culture.

Orlando, FL - Economy is heavily centered around Disney, but apart from that it is probably "meta-southern"

Louisville, KY - Yes, somewhat more Appalachian though and less Southern. Though the Black population could increase the Southern influences.

Baltimore, MD - Maybe in the past, but could be just like any northern metro area today. A large number of blacks would increase the Southern influences.

St. Louis, MO - Seems more Midwestern.

I tried do draw what I consider the South once... The darker the shade, the more southern I consider it.

Note: I did not bother with "islands" such as Chapel Hill.

There's really nothing Southern at all about that light blue part of Texas.

It really marks the distinct point where the South hits the Southwest. But I agree, its not really Southern.

Chapel Hill is not southern, I assure you.  And definitely not Arlington or Baltimore.  Haven't been to the others, but I imagine Charleston and Louisville are the only ones there that could actually be southern, and not by much.

There are plenty of people in the Chapel Hill area that have Southern accents and eat Southern food. Even if the town itself isn't that Southern(due to transplants, it was still fairly Southern when I was a little kid), you can go ten miles and find places that are quite Southern. You definitely can't say that about Baltimore, or even Arlington anymore.

My favorite band from North Carolina (from Chapel Hill):

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-rRIMY3nHRg
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kMMhwR6RKe8
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JaQdpDZRTQ0

Do they have southern accents? And they've been together and from there since at least 1989.

Sure, but that doesn't make Chapel Hill southern.  Most notable places in North Carolina are no longer southern, but everywhere else definitely is.  And the entire DC/Baltimore metro area is nowhere close to being southern.

People from Raleigh and Charlotte tend not to have southern accents either, true.

Well, people that aren't southern usually don't.

What's up with northern MO?  I think you did great on most of that...but not upstate MO.  They are the same, more or less, as any upper midwest farming region AFAICT.

The south stops between Daytona and Orlando. I lived there and Daytona is about as southern as you get but Orlando is in the middle. If you go south of Tampa, you're no longer south.

True, though Charlotte is more culturally Southern than Raleigh or Chapel Hill.

Some, but not a majority. Though it is true that you don't have to go far find areas culturally Southern.

There's really nothing Southern at all about that light blue part of Texas.

Of course not, and one could definitely say the same thing about Miami... but I gave any place that was part of the Confederacy the lightest shade at minimum.

As for Missouri, the northern part of the state has several traits that I tend to associate with the South... I believe high degrees of "American" ancestry and Baptist membership were among them. There were more reasons, including how it votes. Historically the central part of the state was more Southern, but it tends to lack some of the aforementioned characteristics today and votes more "northern."
