If it get thru Filibuster, Murkowski proposes a law that will make Elenor Holmes Norton a Rep without the Senators with voting power, that would be a compromise

that feels very unconstitutional.

What moron decided to call it "State of Washington, Douglass Commonwealth"?
I dunno.
The convention would be to call it Columbia.

Wouldn't the shorthand be Douglass? City of Washington, state/commonwealth of Douglass.

I agree that that’s how it should be, but the act as it stands (I believe) calls it the State of Washington, Douglass Commonwealth. Maybe/hopefully it’ll end up as a Rhode Island and Providence Plantations-style bit of trivia.

The US flag looked better with 48 stars anyway.

Once we admit Douglass, Puerto Rico, Marianas, and Virgins, we'll be at a very similar 9x6 arrangement.

You think the Democrats are going to admit the Marianas and Virgin Islands as well? I'm still doubtful that they'll be successful in admitting Washington D.C. To say nothing of the fact that Puerto Rico still seems to be torn between independence, statehood, and retaining its current status.

This isn’t about democracy, it’s about vexillology.

If they hold a successful statehood referendum and submit a constitution to the federal government, yes, I think they will be admitted as states. But those two island chains are in the very early stages of talking about this. It won't be done this summer like DC statehood will.

Are they in any stage of talking about this at all?

The Manchin Cycle looks to be verging on a cult at this point.

Watching all the red avatars getting mad that their power grab failed is the perfect indictment of U.S. politics.

A power grab is refusing to a sit a Supreme Court justice for 10 months.

A power grab is actively trying to have electoral college votes thrown out cause you’re mad you lost.

Giving representation to the most taxed 700k residents in the nation is not a power grab just because it happens to benefit the party which you oppose.

I never said it was only Democrats who engaged in power grabs. But this right here certainly is an example of them doing just that.

The "power grab" is Republicans not letting the Americans who live in DC have the same rights as any other American.

What rights are those? Electing senators isn’t a right.

Sometimes I wonder what people who don’t believe in democracy are doing on an elections forum.

Tell me where in the U.S. Constitution does it give all American citizens the unconditional right to elect people to the U.S. Senate.

You’ll be looking for a long time.

Tell me where the Constitution defined the limits of what a democracy is.

Tell me how that’s at all relevant to whether or not DC not having senators is unconstitutional.

Is that really what I said? Maybe go back and read it over again.

Imo the right way to deal with Manchin's opposition and make everyone happy would be to reunify West Virginia and Virginia

Wouldn’t that make New Virginia a red state?

Would changing how DC's EVs are allocated require a constitutional amendment or can they do it through legislation alone?

Legislation.

How is that so when they were awarded via a constitutional amendment?

The amendment itself gives Congress the power to determine how they’re allocated.

C'mon folks let's make it happen already!

They're gonna get it done. It would be so embarrassing to have all this attention and keep talking about it and have it fail in the end. If it really weren't going to happen, they would have scuttled this months ago.

Just because it’d be embarrassing doesn’t mean it won’t happen.
