Again, as a quasi-religious paramilitary order, their number 1 concern would be keeping independent from the political hierarchy.  The Jedi were doomed from the second they became generals in the Clone Wars as it destroyed their autonomy.  They're far more like a Crusader military order than anything in contemporary politics...their destruction actually is a pretty clear reference to Phillip the Fair's crushing of the Knights Templar.

Are we really analyzing the Star Wars prequels?

I wouldn't even be surprised if people on here would be analyzing the Extended Universe.
