Got stuck in a blinding storm while driving the mountains around Chattanooga, after having Waze redirect us on some crazy route that took us onto steep, winding mountain roads in the Cloud Valley.

This afternoon, at around 4:30, our family made the decision to take my grandmother Betsy off of life support. Alongside her cancer, she also had a serious blood infection which caused most of her organs to fail. After removing life support, she continued to breathe and have a pulse for another hour and then slipped away. She was surrounded by friends and family, felt no pain when she passed, and went out the way she would have wanted - quiet and dignified. I'll miss her; she was truly a force of nature. Please keep my family in your prayers.

I am increasingly of the belief, with creeping authoritarianism, that one day I'll be dragged out of my house on account of my marriage certificate and disappeared.

My brother overdosed last night. Took five attempts to revive him with narcan. The worst part is that he checked himself out of the hospital and is apparently just roaming around with no money, no shoes, and no plan. I’m terrified about what’s coming next.

Don't be. I know this will sound cruel and heartless, but at this point, all your family can really do is be there for him if he decides to change his ways and be ready to hold a funeral if he doesn't.  From the first of the 12 steps of Nar-Anon, adapted from those of Al-Anon and AA:
We admitted we were powerless over the addict — that our lives had become unmanageable.

It isn’t cruel or heartless and I appreciate the kind words - the situation is still fluid down there but he survived this weekend so that’s a plus. He’s going to detox.

Yeah, this campaign I’m working for SUCKS. Borderline ready to quit. You can’t expect to get almost 300 $5 donations in a month, and you can’t expect to pay me $500 A MONTH and have me going to door to door in 85 degree heat with possible thunderstorms. This is gargantuan bullshit.

Just finished my first year of teaching in Holland.  A lot of things to get used to in terms of the school system, both graduate and undergraduate.  But I enjoy living here very much.  Beautiful environment, friendly people (though they become temporarily insane on bicycles), good colleagues and students, easy travelling to almost everywhere in Europe.  German and Belgian beers easily within reach. I even enjoy learning Dutch, though my conversational skills are coming along too slowly.  Life is nice now

Won $47 dollars at a casino. Spoke to my brother for the first time in five weeks (he’s really embraced sobriety this time). Met my late therapist’s daughter and got to get some closure of sorts. Triggered teh libs.

Just came home from having surgery. They removed a cyst and now they are pretty sure it's not testicular cancer, contrary to what they thought going into this.

Under anesthesia I dreamt about Paul Laxalt like a true member of Atlas.

OMG so big news peeps:

As I was going about my business, a huge beetle-like bug that could fly landed on my monitor, and as anyone would do, I attempted to murder it in cold blood, and I almost had it, but it slipped out of my napkin, dropped to the ground, and disappeared very quickly. I panicked, knowing that I had taken my shot and missed and might have to go into hiding (who can sleep with a big bug with a grudge lurking around your bed?), so I frantically searched my room until I finally lifted up my pillow AND BAM there he was, just WAITING for me to go to sleep, probably so he could burrow into my brain via my olfactory nerve and take over my body to further the B.U.G agenda. After a hot pursuit in the dark alleyways between my bed and the wall, I was able to corner him and take him out once and for all.

I am unable to ascertain whether or not he called for backup. I will arm myself and wait for my fate.

Visited Grandma today. I have this dreadful feeling that it might have been the last time I’ll ever see her. She has end-stage COPD and is totally wheelchair/recliner bound. My mom and Aunt keep claiming she’ll be fine, but I know they’re lying - I found the pamphlet on how to recognize a patient is dying.

I’m going to Tally on Tuesday, classes start next week. Hopefully they’ll distract me enough. On a side note, my brother is 30 days sober and my youngest (and severely autistic) brother said “I love you” for the first time unprompted. His verbal progress has been tremendous since I last saw him at Christmas. So not all bad news.

Three weeks ago I got a flat on my way home from Tally. I got my grandmas barely used car while I was down there. Today on my way to Tally, my tire blew out literally miles away from where it last happened. At the exact same pepboys store right now.

My Grandma remains in hospice but her condition is slightly improving. I few days ago I thought she was a goner. But praise God, that seems to not be the case.

I work as a server/bartender to help pay for school, and I found out today that the restaurant I work at is closing, effective tonight. Sucks, but at least they're letting us come by tomorrow to clear out the pretty sizable liquor closet.

Get there first, get all the top shelf stuff, and sell it for above average prices to rich high school kids.

After months of complete madness in dealing with my publisher, I'm free from the contract and can finally look for someone remotely competent.

I mean, Christ, it was the worst experience ever.
