It's quite disturbing that a sitting Senator is confused about how to vote and has to be coached by staff.

That wouldn't bar him to run for this special election.
No, but there is no indication that he is interested in the Senate race and his plans seem set on SoS.

Mississippi had more lynchings than any other state. Would she have made that comment if she was running against Brandon Pressley or Jim Hood? Probably not. It is a racist comment because she is trying to let extremely racist white people what is at stake.

The Senate really needs to be abolished. The state with the highest black population in the nation pretty much has no representation in the Senate (do you really think Hyde-Smith cares about the black population in her state?). We are overdue for a unicameral legislature.

They have 2 duly elected senators just like everyone else.

Oh, cut the pretense. If you have Senator who is pro-lynching and pro-confederacy that does not represent the entire state and leaves quite a few people without representation. Republicans tend to represent only the people who vote for them and ignore everyone else. You cannot hate and ignore 37% of your state. That is one reason why the VRA exists for House districts. Racially polarized voting results in one side getting no representation.

South Carolina's Republican electorate is different than Mississippi's. A black candidate would not make it out of the primary in Mississippi. South Carolina had more suburbanites where is Mississippi is far more rural.
