If Omar wins the primary (and with that, the general), Congress should refuse to seat her.

Why exactly? Serious question. Besides one questionable anti Israel tweet what exactly has she done that would merit that extraordinary step?
It puts her ability to be fair and just in her decision-making in Congress in question.

Should Steve King also not be seated? He has said far worse things according to many people.  I think King is a racist @sss but if he wins his election of course he should be seated.

Not seating a duly elected member of congress would be an extraordinary thing that would undermine our core democratic principles.

Exactly. Omar's stated position on the jews is deplorable, but if we're expelling members of Congress willy-nilly for racist things, she probably wouldn't even make the top 5 list of members at the top of that cutting block.
Finally, some sense.

In a year of fantastic campaign ads, Ilhan may have the best.

So how's the feeling on the ground? Is this going to be a cake walk for Omar?

Apparently, the establishment can try to stop genuinely good candidates in Kansas 3rd congressional, Michigan Governor, NY-14 and prop up the establishment candidates against the progressive challenger in a plethora of races across the country, but they can't have a decent challenge to Omar.

The "establishment" supports Omar. She literally got the support of Governor Dayton at her campaign launch.
Omar also has the backing of the Mayor of Minneapolis. Though a lot of State Reps and Sens support Anderson Kelliher.

2. You can shout as much as you want, but the cold, hard facts are that Israel is nothing like SA. There was an Arab Supreme Court Justice, the Arabic party is the third-biggest in the parliament, there's a Druze minister.
America is not racist because Clarence Thomas

Ignoring the tweets and all that (not that they're not an issue), I haven't heard an argument as to why Omar, a one term State Rep with no real accomplishments is preferable to Torres Ray, or even Margaret Anderson Kelliher, who are much more accomplished and also running on abolishing ICE and Medicare for all. Torres Ray was even the LG candidate for the most progressive Gubernatorial candidate in 2010 (and a single payer advocate before Sanders.) She's even an immigrant too if you care about that box checking.
“Experience” is always a pretty dumb reason to back someone or not to back someone imho.

One of the most dubious parts of Omar’s platform is, of course, her “Medicare for All (Except Jews)” proposal and promise to immediately write up a declaration of war against Israel

On a more serious note, I’ve yet to see a person of really any standing in the community accuse her of antisemitism, and her, there are only two tweets, and honestly, neither view would be that out of place among must Muslims in the United States. As far as I know, she’s never discriminated against anyone, nor has she berated her Jewish colleagues in politics or her community accused her of bigotry. She was even endorsed by the Jewish mayor of Minneapolis.

If two Israel-critical tweets is all it takes to be labeled “a fire-Breathing anti-Semite” I'd love to see what Atlas would have to say about the late Labour MP Gerald Kaufman.

Based on the results in St. Louis Park and SW Minneapolis, she probably got ~40% of the Jewish vote. And a good chunk of the rest was votes for Margaret Anderson Kelliher who is heavily tied to the area, not anti-Omar votes.

FYI I voted MAK.
Weren’t you supporting Torres Ray?

Ms. Omar will, tbh, fit quite well in the same chamber with Rep. Steve King. Still, Paul Nehlen (a much more vicious antisemite, no doubt) winning 11% of the Republican votes in his district and Ilhan Omar becoming a congresswoman show why a Jewish state is crucial.

Try and chill dude lol, it'll be ok, she's not going to nuke Israel or anything lol.

Um, that's like saying it's OK to have David Duke in the House because he isn't going to personally lynch any blacks.
Two tweets critical of Israel is definitely the same as being the Grand Wizard of the Klan

If I compared her to Steve King, would it be more appropriate?
The fact that you would compare a Somali refugee to an open white supremacist is pretty disturbing, in all honesty.

It’s Omar’s two tweets vs King’s decades long trend of actions and words. And you’re all “I literally cannot tell the difference!!”

Once again those tweets were NOT AN ISSUE. the only outlets reporting on them were Breitbart-esque right wing blogs that obviously your typical MN-05 voter doesn't pay attention to.

If Minneapolis was full of voters with a burning raging desire to throw all Jews into the sea then I'd wager they probably wouldn't have elected a Jewish mayor last year.

Yeah, like I said, that's probably why Haaretz didn't even mention it. It's just not widely-known, which to me is sad because it shows the media is too absorbed in identity politics (of both sides) to raise serious issues and make politicians face them.
You cannot honestly think that “Black Muslim does thing that shows SHE’S THE REAL RACIST” wouldn’t be a thing in American the media. You cannot think that the American media would go out of it’s way to protect random Black Muslim lady because of “identity politics”. You cannot be that daft.

I think the reason why it’s not being reported because Minnesota Jews seem to not really care about two years-old tweets.

The difference is that King has been a politician for decades, so we have much more material to draw conclusions from.
Omar had an inauspicious debut on the national stage and her unapologetic stance doesn't convince me that she will shy away from controversy.
Inauspicious for who? Us losers on Atlas? More ink has been spilled about her marrying her brother (a thing that didn’t happen) than her two tweets because no one cares.

Because her campaign was extremely well run and received support from the Democratic establishment to grassroots orgs. That is hardly “inauspicious.”

I love how no one mentions that this major controversy we are talking about occurred in 2012, and nothing else has happened since then.

Tell that to James Gunn.
1. Those were repeated tweets that occurred multiple times, instead of the one obscure tweet we have here.

2. They were rather explicit and were about many topics that were rather terrible, such as rape and child abuse.

3. The move to fire him was highly criticized and was lambasted by most media and entertainment giants.

These are not the same

They were also jokes. Omar wasn't joking when she talked about the evils of Israel.
Joking about child molestation on several occasions is worse than tweeting twice about how you disagree with Israeli policy.

Omar straight-up said she opposes BDS, which basically destroyed Carlos Ramirez-Rosa's career.

Probably because Omar dislikes how BDS advocates for nonviolent solutions. She wants violent "solutions".

My interpretation of this tweet is that she advocates for a military invasion of Israel through Gaza.

Woah woah woah. He's still a 28 yo alderman with his entire career ahead of him. His activist base adores him, and it seems like he ran a super-efficient office (he processed something like 24k constituent service requests in his first term?).

Unless this is about the 4th CD race, in which case he was never going to win that in the first place. He made a strong organizational showing (getting like 5k signatures in a week) and cut a deal to make sure he wasn't considered a spoiler for Garcia.

He's fine, don't worry about him. Smiley
I’m talking about Biss kicking him off the ticket.
