How on earth did the DCCC or his opponent fail to check into his background?

I'm surprised it took this long for somebody to figure this out, but I also wish I had as brazen an ability to lie on my resume.

Earlier in my career I used to be responsible for sorting through resumes and interviewing engineer candidates (which thankfully I don't do anymore).  One guy had the most impressive educational resume I ever saw, featuring BS, MS, and PhD in EE from Stanford, MIT, and Caltech in some combination.  It was indeed too good to be true, as I quickly discovered by calling the universities, and into the wastebasket it went.  I've never understood how people think they can get away with something so easily verifiable.

I’ll be very interested in seeing if his wife’s story comes out. There’s a nonzero chance they’re still together and only divorced to keep up the appearance of being gay...

This is starting to sound like a soap opera!

Quote
The New York Attorney General’s Office said it is “looking into a number of issues" surrounding Congressman-elect George Santos, who was the subject of a bombshell New York Times investigation that questions whether the incoming Republican lawmaker fabricated much of his biography, including his education, work history and financial dealings.

The office, however, did not confirm whether it had opened an official investigation into Santos and declined to comment further on the matter.

Tulsi Gabbard just bodied Santos while guest hosting Tucker tonight.

Imagine that. Santos was too far even for a transparently self-serving grifter like Tulsi.

If the institutional right-leaning media (Fox/NY Post/basically anything owned by NewsCorp) are doing this it seems like a pretty transparent sign that the Republican powers-that-be want him gone. My guess is they know where his money came from and can foresee the fallout. Don't be surprised if things move quickly almost immediately after he votes to make McCarthy speaker.

IMO it's basically the opposite. Tulsi is Tucker's guest host and Tucker is a staunch anti-Kevin McCarthy person. It seems to me much more like Tulsi and Tucker's game is to try to force Santos out to make McCarthy's math harder and increase the likelihood that someone else becomes Speaker. That what this is really about is Dumping Kevin McCarthy and Santos is just a way to that end.

Could very well be an enemy-of-my-enemy situation! But I don't want to start suspecting conspiracies and whatnot - this guy is hemorrhaging allies left and right.

One thing to remember is that the House can't refuse to seat a duly elected incoming member for things like corruption or criminality, only for failing to meet the Constitutional requirements for the office (age, citizenship, and residency -- which admittedly could be in question here).  This was established by the Supreme Court in the Adam Clayton Powell case.  Unless it can be proven that Santos isn't a US citizen or resident of New York, he's going to be seated; the only way to remove him would be expulsion, which would require a 2/3 majority.  Assuming all Democrats go along, how likely is that 78 Republicans (77 after the VA-04 vacancy is filled) also vote to expel, knowing that the Democrats would likely win the seat back in a special election?

Wait: it was my understanding that a candidate or member of Congress [who is a citizen] didn't even have to live in the state in which they're seeking office. Am I wrong or missing something?

EDIT: OK, I see the Constitution does have the state requirement. I'm sure I knew this and it's just the cobwebs in my brain these days. Guess I mixed that up with district-based residency!

Understandable for us Georgians after the constant harping over Ossoff's district residency in the GA-06 special. Wink

It's been argued that McCarthy needs Santos's vote for Speaker, but he really doesn't because of the current VA-04 vacancy.  Right now a Speaker needs 218 of 434 votes (assuming everyone is present and votes), but if Santos were not seated it would be 217 of 433 -- so his vote would make no difference.

Is there a scenario where they could hold a recall?

There is no recall mechanism for Representatives or Senators.

Question; what happens if a member of congress is extradited and imprisoned in a foreign country? Is there any way to vacate his seat?

A member can be expelled by a 2/3 majority of the House.

This, from a Republican former Congressman, sums it up:
