I will never understand why there are 5 seats and only two JCP candidates. How could progressives reconquer the Senate if we don't even have enough candidates to have a majority ??

Because you can't win five seats.

If you don't try, sure that you can't.

No, it has to do with how the preference math works. If we run too many candidates than we risk splitting votes to the point of not having any viable candidates.

The STV system is done precisely to avoid this threat by chosing the 5 candidates that are most representative of the electorate.

With three major parties, each party is going to at least get one of their candidates in. It's inevitable.

That means we could get 3 people elected if we try.

True, though if you fail you could endanger Marokai or Fritz's re-election bid. I think they are about the two best people the JCP could have in the Senate at this juncture.

Also take into account, most JCP and RPP voters will preference the 3 DA candidates after their partie's candidates. A majority of Atlasians have them in the Top 5, but not many will have them in the Top 2.

My thoughts exactly. Pretty much everyone will have the DA candidates somewhere in their top five. However, quotas dilute your vote enough that it is unlikely to be of much help past your third or fourth preference.
