Are you doing this with Python? How long does it take to run a member's posts? Maybe we could run the top 100-300 members in post count and get a pretty reliable list for the forum-wide.

Yea, it's a Python script, I have it set to pause for two seconds on every page to avoid any risk of server overload so it takes about (numPosts / 750) minutes to run for a particular user.

I don't mind sharing the code but would want to get the OK from Virginia first, since an Atlas scraper could be a dangerous thing have floating around.  There are people like coolface who are totally obsessed with Atlas so it's easy to imagine it being abused or used to break the forum.

I fear that making these metrics more accessible will encourage bad posting habits (this exercise is already showing that the posts that attract recommendations are often not a given user's best contributions), but it would be interesting to see results for some of the forum's more polarizing characters (e.g. Jaichind, Landslide Lyndon).

This is definitely a one-off just-for-fun thing, I don't think this kind of gaming should be made a consistent part of the forum that we can use to measure ourselves against each other.

What I've found so far is that the top posts tend to be either:

• Pithy one-liners
• Broadly-agreeable liberal sentiments expressed early in an extremely popular thread
• Good-news community posts of the "I'm having a baby" or "I am returning to the forum" variety

I am also surprised because I expected there to be a lot of variety in people's top scores but instead it seems like there's a pretty hard cap of around 65

Fascinating mix. There are some posts in there I completely forgot making. Frankly I don't get how some made that list ("Honestly, massive respect if so." did NOT deserve 27 recommends, come on). As I expected it skews toward short, snappy quips and comebacks, or otherwise references to Atlas memes. There are other ones that are just earnestly trying to match the seriousness of a difficult situation, which I'm glad a lot of posters resonated with. And there are some personal life updates, which I'm glad people were interested to it. I guess the one I'm most glad to see on the list is my in-depth explanation of how I was going to vote in the French presidential election. My effortposts don't seem to get much traction in general but I'm glad this one caught on, and it's one I put a lot of soul-searching into.

Overall a fun exercise, though I'll be mindful of EC's point and try not to take this too seriously.

Side note, I am visiting France in a month, any recommendations?

Big problem we're having right now is, we want to rent a car to drive around in Provence, but all the car rental agencies seem like garbage.  Just the same brands we have in America that always have really long lines even if you reserved, scam you on insurance, and then scam you on "damage" when you return.
