There are several others that could be largely decriminalized, but with harsh penalties for any crimes committed in conjunction with those drugs.
Why is committing a crime on a drug worse than committing a crime sober?  Is this the same logic that gives us Hate Crime laws?

Eh, it really wouldn't get much in the way of reducing the deficit, more like expand it. For example, MI Tobacco taxes only compensate for 10-20% of the health care costs incurred for Tobacco-related illnesses.

As for the people voting for all but crack/meth, etc., I do wonder why you would allow barbiturates, which are considerably more dangerous, addictive, and completely useless since the advent of benzodiazepines.
Ignorance.  It's the same thing that made some of them illegal in the first place.

The people that are always for making HARD drugs legal are the very people who use them.

That's not true. I don't use hard drugs, but I don't want them to remain illegal. I don't want people going to prison for what should be a personal choice.

Same here. I've never used anything on the list, but I want most of them to become legal.
Aye.  And it's obvious Mr.Keller has no idea what a "hard drug" is.  From wiki:

One of the most ignorant comments I've ever read here.  I know you don't actually mean "drugs" are bad.  You mean "the drugs that have been illegal since I was born and for reasons I don't understand" are bad.  Yes, that's an easy answer to come up with and as a bonus, fits in your world view.  Hopefully with a little growth you can get past this.

Where did I say "I've done them so they must be ok for legal sale"?  I can't take illegal drugs, I could lose my security clearance and thus, my job.  I don't want drugs to be legal so I can take them, I want drugs to be legal because it's completly un-American for them to be illegal.  The only reason they are illegal now is because of ignorance.

But as this thread has made clear, you have no idea what a "hard drug" is.

Wait, how do you define "psychoactive?"

Because that's not what I'm talking about.

 Alters your brain.

That's how you define "psychoactive" and you're claiming tobacco isn't?  How odd.

There is a chance well run govt funded health care now?  I'll give you that there is a chance we'll get govt funded health care, but I'll eat my hat if it's in any way "well run".

Like I said before the drug debate gets nowhere because both sides will always be right.  It turns into a flame match most of the time.  Its not like me nor you are going to convice eachother to change our views.
Yeah, nobody has ever changed their mind before on the issue of drug legalization.Roll Eyes

I don't think anybody here expects to change YOUR mind, you seem to have your ideology set in concrete (that isn't a good thing).  There are other people reading this thread that maybe haven't made their mind up yet or are torn on the issue.

(and drug legalization discussions are all rainbows and candy compared to abortion or the death penalty....you might want to avoid those.  I try to.)

Aye!  I'll stick my head into a DP debate on occasion but I don't even open abortion threads unless my masochistic side is in control that day.

I just noticed 73 people have voted in this poll, how close is that to the record?

My favorite part is the use of "secular" as an insult.
