Porter may be one of my least favorite politicians in the country. I’d rather have six more years of zombie Feinstein.

Endorsed, regardless of who else runs.

Side note: Porter was clearly right to fire that moron for ignoring the office’s COVID testing policies and then proceeding to give her COVID; if some selfish dumba** gave me COVID and put my and my family’s lives at risk with their stupidity, you better believe I’d fire them too!  This isn’t a scandal and there is no good-faith argument for pretending that it is

That staffer's friend was brutally murdered, so I suspect she had bigger things on her mind than testing for a disease that's not even really a threat anymore.

Seriously, it's one thing if this story happened in May 2020. But imagine still being scared of COVID in summer 2022. That's not the kind of person we need in a high-profile position like being a Senator from the country's most populous state. Katie Porter can f**k off to Communist China where she would be much more at home.

I'm curious about recent examples of other primaries where the debate was this heated over candidates with miniscule ideological differences

Massachusetts in 2020. It was so insufferable and it gives me PTSD just thinking about it.

This was always obvious and I'm not sure why anyone seriously thought otherwise.

Newsom has previously indicated he’ll name a caretaker who doesn’t run for 2024, right?

Yes.

Newsom was an idiot to box himself in like this. California doesn't even have a large black population, so I'm not sure who he thought he was trying to pander to.

Since when have temporary placeholder Senators become such a big deal? Did anyone care that Chris Christie appointed a Republican to replace Lautenberg?

Obviously this is unlikely, but if he's insisting on appointing a black woman:

Press X to doubt.  Media wishcasting does not make it so.
Also reminder that this is The Daily Mail.

What IS the daily mail? Some tabloid piece or the British answer to Fox News?

A British tabloid with a notorious right-wing bias. I would say it's more equivalent to the New York Post.

I don't think it would even be much of a loss for Democrats if this whole saga tanked Newsom's presidential ambitions. If anything, he's one of the weaker potential candidates who could run post-Biden.

If she runs and people support her, I don't want to hear anything about McCormick living in CT.

It’s actually probably better for Dems that Garvey is running. Assuming he makes the top two, which is not hard to do given that he’s the only credible Republican, it allows the top Democrat to lock up in the race in March rather than waste energy and money on a bloody intra-party battle for another 8 months.

Maryland's third Senator got appointed to Judiciary. Why were people dooming about this again?

So come January 2025, California will actually be represented in the Senate by two people who live there? What a novel concept.

I don't think the ad makers quite realized that the official office (which he's telling people to call) and campaign are totally separate entities. The intern/low-level staffer who answers the phone won't be allowed to discuss campaign matters because of ethics rules.

Assuming a Schiff vs. Garvey general, could this turn out to be the reverse of KY 2020 where Republican small donors pour a ton of money into a race that never had a chance of succeeding because they hate the Democrat so much?

I'm just so happy Katie Porter will be out. She just seems like an all-around terrible person.

California once again slow in counting? Seems like not even 50% are in. Honestly, this is kind of sad for a first world country and its biggest state.

Whild I didn't expect Porter to advance to November, she performed worse than I thought.

We have a very inclusive voting system that allows peoples votes to be counted securely. I think that is more important than getting instantaneous results for the media.

I’ve said this before and I’ll say it again. Ease of voting and ballot security don’t need to be mutually exclusive with counting speed.

A day or two is one thing. 2-3 weeks should never be acceptable.

I'm glad this race was early in the cycle bc the discourse was kind of becoming unbearable. Is there evidence really that Schiff is so much more conservative? He just seems like a normie Dem at this point. I probably would've voted for Porter (though have no issues with Schiff; Lee was just too out there with her policies), but Porter really did run a terrible campaign.

Yeah, MA 2020 was awful in part because the primary was all the way in September. It is nice that this race is effectively over now.

Also a Schiff-Porter general would have siphoned away tens of millions of dollars that could go to Tester, Brown, Gallego, Rosen, etc.

So what's up with Santa Clara county? Why would Schiff's vote share be 60% lower in the Special compared to the Full term? That seems like a pretty drastic difference.

Probably a tabulation error.
A pretty blatant tabulation error going on for days without being corrected would be quite embarassing.

What? California is awful at running elections? Who could ever guess such a thing?

Hot damn. Since the top two system was instituted, has there ever been a statewide election where a Republican placed first?
