We will survive but this is a giant leap back. All progress made over at least the last decade or two will have to be remade. And there will be no significant scientific or cultural advances until there is an administration committed to such. Trump would be happy if we returned to the America of the 60s or earlier. There is no forward thinking with the GOP as it is today.
Sometimes I comfort myself thinking of Wilson and the League of Nations. The Republicans wanted nothing to do with it and won the day in the late 1910s, but in the end we wound up leading the United Nations about 20 years later. Perhaps Obama similarly was at the vanguard of a progressive era, and the next Democratic president will take us further than he was able.
