There are Brazilian presidential elections in every 4 years and French presidential election in every 5 years. So, in every 20 years, French and Brazilian presidential elections take place in the same year.

In 2002, Lula endorsed Jospin, but he failed to go to the runoff by a small margin. The runoff was between a candidate close to the center (Chirac) and a Le Pen. Chirac won a landslide. Lula won a landslide.

In 2022, Lula endorsed Mélenchon, but he failed to go to the runoff by a small margin. The runoff was between a candidate close to the center (Macron) and a Le Pen. Macron won an almost landslide...

In the 2022 runoff, Lula endorsed Macron, who retweeted this endorsement.

Brazilian left-wingers implying that Macron beating Le Pen -> Lula beating Bolsonaro is top-tier Atlas posting.

Let us know what you think when Bolsonaro wins.

I don't think Bolsonaro will win. I also don't think that Macron beating Le Pen is proof he will lose.

I also think that buritobr was doing nothing more than pointing out mere coincidences, so if you actually think that he legitimately argued - as a Brazilian leftist - that Macron beating Le Pen is proof that he'll lose, then Idk what to tell you.

One would think USAmerican users would be more familiar with the concept of "mirages"

If I had a nickel for every time a revered elder statesman who had to make a political comeback in order to take down a fascist incumbent after a tragedy prevented them from running in the last election had to watch that fascist incumbent start out with a lead that's destined to shrink & disappear over time, I'd have 2 nickels, which isn't a lot, but it's weird that it's happened twice.

Haven't been following this, but I assume Lula can be expected to be more pro-Russia than Bolsonaro?

Bolsonaro visited Putin just a few days before the invasion while Lula at least tried both sides-ing the war, so not really, no.

Sergio Moro has just been elected senator in Paraná, unseating his former ally Álvaro Dias and overperforming all the polls.

Historically if Lula gets to the second round he always overperforms in the second round (1989 2002 2006).

Usually candidates outperform their first round share in the second round, yes.

I think they mean that Lula's final 2nd-round results always end up being an overperformance relative to his standing in 2nd-round polls?

What are the chances that such a right-wing Congress impeaches Lula to install a more conservative President in Alckmin?

A couple years ago I made a poll asking who was the worst democratic leader of Trump, Netanyahu, Duterte and Bolsonaro.

We've cleaned up well.

Give Bibi like 48 hours.

(Also, the Philippines finds itself stuck with a President Marcos, which wasn't exactly great the last time around.)

You love freedom so much that you wanna eliminate the people's freedom to govern, rule, & control themselves? Make it make sense.

Or, better yet, just cope.

Stop derailing the thread with loaded questions and saying "cope". This is not a thread debating whether suspending elections is good or bad. I simply voiced my frustration with the results.

Well, no, you actually proposed literally eliminating the Brazilian people's democratic freedom to elect their President, & that obviously isn't equivalent to just "simply voic[ing your] frustration with the results," hence why I'm still waiting for a legitimate answer from you since all I asked you is how you think anti-democratic fascism would somehow be the PRO-freedom outcome here, which is only a loaded question with the symptom-tinted glasses of being utterly unable to f**king cope

(And LMAO you can't just dodge the issue by claiming that those of us rightly expressing utter disgust at your take are derailing the thread because this purportedly isn't a thread for discussing whether or not the suspension of democracy is a good idea when you're literally the one who started this whole mess, lol the absolute audacity produced by cope incapability)

I'm so glad that there are several dozen posts in response to one of the forum's most dumb and boring posters. You really did own him with facts and logic, or whatever. I'm sure he learned his lesson and will be more reasonable in the future. Seriously, do you people ever learn?

Anyway, congratulations to Lula on the hard-fought victory.

Roasting right-wingers unable to cope with their election Ls is literally half the fun of left-wing election wins, I will not apologize for upholding such a crucial aspect of the very hard-fought victory you seek to congratulate! (This doesn't quote a DP post or engage with any infracted content, pls don't erase this comment, luv you Mods Purple heart)

Lmao, lula despises generic liberals, most likely he doesn't care what nonsense a NATO servant has to say.
Considering the growing wave of fascism around the world, Lula most definitely considers himself in the same camp as Biden, Trudeau, and Macron. Vs Trump, Bolso, Netanyahu, Putin and Xi

Lol, dude since the war started he has been saying that Ukraine is to blame for the war.

This is false: he's "only" been both-sides'ing Z & NATO since Day 1, but that's compared to Bolsonaro, who literally visited Putin a week before the invasion that he then refused to condemn.

Likely the only handover of the presidential sash we'll witness with outgoing incumbent Bolsonaro:

So the only right wing governments left on the continental western hemisphere are Ecuador, Paraguay, Uruguay, El Salvador, and Guatemala.

Maybe at the national levels, but looking at just them only obviously doesn't negate any of the sub-national governments over which the right-wing definitely dominates in certain locations on the American continent. (Source: am a Floridian.)
