I appreciate that introduction very much, and I think the senator has put the issue fairly.

I have had a wonderful tour today down from Council Bluffs, and if you will allow me to say so, I am so incredibly grateful to have been able to speak with so many of the fine people in Iowa. I have often said that Frémonters are the best people in this country: there is an honesty about you that is lacking on the other side of the Mississippi, and it does my heart good to see you and walk among you as a neighbor.

I believe Iowa is beginning to wake up to the situation, and after tomorrow I won't have to say anything anymore about you voting the Labor ticket.

The reason for that, as I have been saying since the start of this campaign, is that the Labor party is the party of the farmers and the working people of Iowa. The Federalist Rich Man's party is, as they say themselves, the "party of the South."

I wonder how many of you here in Iowa would like to be subject to the income taxes which are now being debated in Nashville. In that region, a middle class person pays a minimum income tax of 3.5% —this on top of the taxes levied by the state and local governments, which can run as high as 7%. That is 10% or more of your income going to the regional authorities, in addition to whatever you owe to the federal government.

We have a different way of doing things in Frémont. Since I took over the ministry for the second time two years ago, we have entirely abolished state and local taxes here in Iowa. And we have abolished income taxes for working people earning less than $125,000 a year. We have entirely abolished the sales tax and the poor tax, and we have abolished property taxes for the bottom 90% of homeowners.

If you are the median person in Iowa earning $31,000 a year, you owe no taxes to Des Moines or to Denver. That is entirely the result of the policy of the Labor party.

For years the Federalist Rich Man's party and their friends have begged me to raise taxes on the working class. In their speeches and their propaganda spots, they have attacked me viciously for charging such high rates to the millionaires and billionaires —and in the states and regions where they hold power, they have used it to pass tax cuts for the rich and tax hikes for the working and middle classes. If the Federalists ever got control in Denver, they would immediately cut taxes for the rich (they say so!) and pay for it by raising yours.

This is what the Federalists promise when they come here begging for votes. They do not care about representing you because you are not their constituent. They represent the rich and the powerful corporate interests who come here to destroy your farms and small businesses and send your jobs to Mexico.

In the course of this campaign, not one Frémonter has come here to speak on behalf of the Federalist candidates. Their surrogates are drawn exclusively from the ranks of reactionary Southern politicians.

We may therefore well believe them when the Federalist leaders call their party "the party of the South."

When you cast your vote for the Federalist slate, you are not voting for your fellow Iowans. You are voting for the Southern Federalist establishment.

For the last four years your government has fought so that every Iowan has the right to live under their own roof and eat bread off their own table. At every turn we have been opposed by the Southern Federalist Rich Man's party.

When it was time to guarantee the rights of working people, the Southern Federalist party voted against us.

When it was time to raise wages for working people, the Southern Federalist party voted against us.

When it was time to balance the budget by raising taxes on the rich, the Southern Federalist party voted against us.

When it was time to repeal the poor tax, the Southern Federalist party voted against us.

When it was time to rebuild after a devastating flood, the Southern Federalist party was nowhere to be found! If there was no money in it for them, I suppose they did not much care what became of Iowa!

When your governor and legislature fight the policies that would help you and your family at every chance they get, it is time to ask, are they really your representatives at all?

The people of Iowa have a choice in this election.

They can chose an economy that puts the needs of small farmers and working people ahead of rich corporations. They can chose to create hundreds and thousands of jobs in green energy, green infrastructure, and green manufacturing. They can chose to protect their sacred constitutional rights: the right to freedom of speech, the right to vote, the right to organize, and the right to bear arms.

Or they can chose to give their government over to the Southern politicians who will run this state as an outpost of Nashville, who care nothing for the people of Iowa, who know nothing of our traditions or our way of life.

I say the people of Iowa are beginning to wake up to the situation. They are not going to put up with another six months of Southern Federalist misrule.

On election day you are going to vote to make Ed Finkenhauer your next governor! And you are going to elect a Labor majority in the legislature!

It does my heart good to breath the clean Iowa air and pass my days in the company of real Iowans! We have had a wonderful tour down from Cedar Bluffs. It has been my privilege to speak with so many of you in this campaign, and to hear your concerns for the future of this state and of this commonwealth. The people here this evening are real patriots, and I know that so long as the government stays with the people, it is in good hands.

I'd like to thank the members who have joined me this evening in coming to speak with all of you, and I promise Ed will be out in a minute or two. I know you are all anxious to hear from him. But first if you will allow me I would like to say a few words about the nature of this campaign and the coming election.

Iowa has always held a special place in my heart. All throughout my time in government, you have been among the strongest supporters of me and the Labor party's agenda for this commonwealth.

In the first parliament, your member R. Fayette was one of the greatest friends of my government. He helped us to pass the reforms to public education, to increase funding for school lunches and universal preschool, and he helped us to pass the local living wage —which ensures that today, Frémonters earn more per year than anyone else in the country.

It was another of your members, Henry Wallace, who was an early supporter of mine, and who helped to pass many of the great labor laws that protect the rights of working people in the workplace, at home, and in the courtroom.

Last year, it was your member of parliament, Koopa D. Quick, who worked with us to reform higher education so that every Frémonter can get a college education if they want it, and who worked with us to establish the FEA.

The incredible progress we have made in Frémont is directly attributable to the Labor party and to the loyal support of the people of Iowa. And I believe you are not about to flag in that support.

I believe that come election day, you are going to elect Ed Finkenhauer governor of Iowa. And you are going to elect a Labor majority in the legislature along with him!

That is because the Labor party is the party of the farmers and the working people of Iowa. The Federalist party is the "party of the South," as they say themselves.

I will tell you what I mean when I say the Federalist party is the Southern Rich Man's party.

The opposition leaders were here in this state a few weeks ago promising the people of Iowa whatever they could think of as long as they would vote the Federalist ticket. Somewhere along the line they promised that if you would only vote for them, you would all see a generous tax cut.

Of course we know that a Federalist majority would never cut your taxes even if every one of their candidates were elected. That is because they cannot —because the Labor party has already cut your taxes to zero!

Today in Iowa, not one person pays so much as a cent in any state or local tax. No person who earns less than $125,000 a year pays a cent to the region in income tax. The bottom 90% of homeowners pay no property tax. The sales tax, the poor tax, toll roads, have all been abolished by the Labor party and your government in Denver.

But it so happens that over in Nashville, the Southern Federalists are this very moment discussing the taxes they will collect in their own region. Under their current plan, a middle class person earning $75,000 a year will pay as much as 10% of their income in local, state, and regional income taxes —on top of whatever Uncle Sam wants.

But the rich men in the South will pay hardly anything more than that —just 9% to the regional government, on top of their state and local taxes. This is because of the great concern the Southern Federalist party for the plight of the oppressed millionaires and billionaires of this country, who are presently drowning in profits from taking your jobs and shipping them overseas.

This is what the Federalists mean when they come here talking of tax cuts.

That is not how we do things here in Frémont. We believe that the heaviest burden should be borne by those who have the most: and we do not believe in bleeding dry the working families of this country in order that some primped-up hedge fund manager from Staten Island may grow rich without ever doing any work.

Again and again the Southern Federalists and their friends have begged me to raise taxes on the working class. They have attacked me viciously in the press and in their propaganda spots on television for charging such high rates of the richest 1%.

I say we will never consent to cut taxes for the rich by so much as a dime if it means raising taxes on the working and middle class families of this state!

We are going to take that money and we are going to use it to help the farmers and the working people of Iowa.

We are going to create hundreds and thousands of jobs in green energy, green infrastructure, and green manufacturing.

We are going to invest in flood protection and disaster preparedness.

We are going to solve the rural health crisis.

We are going to continue to look after our small farmers and rural communities who are the heart and the soul of this country.

Already my government has undertaken to answer these promises.

We have passed the Green Futures Act to develop green energy production here in Iowa. With this act we will invest $350 in wind, solar, and other green industries that will employ Iowans and make Frémont the energy capital of the nation.

Just today we have passed the Climate Preparedness Act to invest $75 million on disaster relief and preparedness.

We have passed the Rural Health Act to hire more doctors and build more hospitals in rural areas.

We have extended the subsidies in the 2019 farm bill, making more than $10 million in subsidies to small farmers in the last two years.

When I say the Labor party is the one true friend Iowa has ever had, I am not asking for your trust. I am telling you the facts.

Again and again and again we have fought for the farmers and working people of Iowa, the big cities and small towns all across this state, from the Missouri to the Mississippi, from the Minnesota border to the Chariton River. We will not stop until every Iowan has the right to live under their own roof and eat bread from their own table

At every turn, the Southern Federalist party has opposed our measures.

When it was time to guarantee the rights of working people, the Southern Federalist party voted against us.

When it was time to raise wages for working people, the Southern Federalist party voted against us.

When it was time to balance the budget by raising taxes on the rich, the Southern Federalist party voted against us.

When it was time to repeal the poor tax, the Southern Federalist party voted against us.

When the Federalist leaders say their party is "the party of the South," we may very well believe them! Their actions prove it. Their conduct in this campaign proves it.

The people of Iowa do not wish to be governed as an outpost of Nashville.

That is what you get when you vote the Federalist ticket. You are not voting for your fellow Iowans; you are voting for the Southern Federalist leaders who have made this whole campaign.

The people of Iowa are an intelligent people. They are beginning to wake up to the situation.

I believe that in a few days time, there will no longer be any need for me to ask you to vote for the Labor party candidates.

You are going to take back your state from the crooks and Souther carpetbaggers!

You are going to win!

I have had a grand time touring across this state today. Iowans are some of the most hospitable people in the country; and it has been my pleasure to speak with so many of you, and hear what you have to say about the state of our commonwealth in these final hours of the campaign.

The people are beginning to wake up to the situation. I believe that on election day, you are going to elect Ed Finkenhauer your next governor. And you are going to elect a Labor majority in the legislature along with him!

That is because the Labor party is the party of the farmers and the working people of Iowa. The Federalist party is, as they say themselves, "the party of the South."

The Southern opposition leaders get very angry when I say that. But those are their own words.

When the vice chair of the Federalist party was in Nyman last month, he called that party "the party of the South." By his actions in this campaign, he has proved the truth of that statement.

The Southern Federalist party have asked you to give them another six months in Des Moines. If you do, you know exactly what you are going to get: higher taxes, and less of everything else.

For the last four years, the Labor party has fought every hour of every day for the farmers and the working people of Iowa. At every step of the way we have been opposed by the Southern Federalist party.

When the time came to protect the right of workers to organize and have their rights protected in the workplace and in the courtroom, the Southern Federalist party voted against us.

When the time came to raise wages for working people, the Southern Federalist party voted against us.

When the time came to balance the budget by raising taxes on the rich, the Southern Federalist party voted against us.

For years the Southern Federalist party and their friends have begged me to raise taxes on the working class. They have attacked me viciously for charging such high rates to the millionaires and billionaires in the press and in their television propaganda spots.

But today in Frémont, no-one who earns less than $125,000 a year owes a cent in taxes to Denver or Des Moines. This is entirely thanks to the policies of the Labor party.

When you vote the Labor ticket, you are not just voting for your fellow Iowans. You are voting for your own interests.

A Labor administration means more jobs in green energy, green infrastructure, and green manufacturing; more money for rural schools and hospitals; more money for flood protection; more freedom for working people to decide their own destinies; more freedom for small farmers to make an honest living without the oppressive domination of Southern big agriculture.

The Federalists do not even pretend to support these programs. That is because they have no interest in Iowa and no understanding of its people or traditions.

Not one Frémonter has appeared to speak on behalf of the Federalist candidates in the course of this campaign. Their surrogates are drawn entirely from the ranks of the Southern political establishment.

We may well believe them when they say their party is "the party of the South."

The people of Iowa have had enough of Southern domination. They have had enough of a governor who only works to obstruct the people's business, instead of working for the people.

That is why you are going to vote the Labor ticket on election day.

Together we are going to take back Des Moines for the people of Iowa!

In a televised address to the people of Utah.

10 May 2021

I condemn in the strongest terms the governor of Utah, Mr. Udall, for his incompetent handling of public records related to the COVID-19 pandemic, and I disavow his administration. I confirm that the decision to withhold vital statistics was made without my knowledge, and had I known I would have immediately instructed the governor to hand over the true numbers. This government does not need to falsify evidence to project strength, and it is an insult to the brave men and women working on the front lines of our pandemic response for the governor to suggest that their achievements are somehow diminished by honesty on the part of his office.

There is no place for such ineptitude and poor judgement in the Labor party, and I call on the governor to immediately resign and withdraw from the election. If he does not, he should be impeached.

I thank you all for welcoming me here to-day. It does my heart good to be among honest folk, and I am only sorry I have not had an opportunity to visit you sooner.

I know you are all eager to hear from Amanda, and I promise she will be out in just a bit. But first I would like to say a few words, if you will allow me, on the state of this campaign and the issues which are at stake in this election.

I have come here in person because what I have to say is too important to be transmitted over the airwaves. I would not trust this message to anyone but myself.

Your government in this state is under attack. It is besieged by enemies without and beset by enemies within.

From the first day of my ministry we have declared our purpose to create a people's government in the West.

We in the West are engaged in the greatest human endeavor: to create a society free from want. We will not rest until every man, woman, and child in this commonwealth has the right to live under their own roof and eat bread from their own table.

The enemies of this vision are the enemies of Frémont. They are the blood-suckers and money-grubbers; the corrupt Eastern special interests; the lying, cheating, thieving politicians.

I am sorry to say your governor is one of this last lot. He is one of the worst.

I say that he is no friend of mine, and he is no friend of the Labor party. And we are going to throw him out of office.

Your governor could have been a great man and a great leader. He could have served his state and his party with honor and distinction. But he lost his way. He forgot that the true purpose of government is to serve the people.

When politicians care more about the frills and ceremonies of office than the truth, they are no longer servants of the people. Then it is time to exercise the right which is written into our Declaration of Independence: "to institute new government, laying its foundation on such principles and organizing its powers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their safety and happiness."

That is what we are going to do in Utah. We are going to run the crooks and chicanerers —in all parties —out of office. And we are going to elect Amanda Young the next governor of this state!

When the Union met defeat at the Battle of Bull Run, its bitterness taught them the resolve and strength of character with which they won the war, overthrew the Slave Power, and established universal liberty from one end of the continent to the other. The weak leaders who had blundered into catastrophe were replaced by men of purpose: leaders worthy of the name, who forged from tragedy "a new nation, conceived in liberty and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal."

That is what we are trying to do here in Utah. That is the kind of leader we have in Amanda Young.

It is not enough to remove a governor or to punish those who aided his deception. We must destroy corruption wherever it exists: in politics and in business, and in the hearts of men.

We cannot tolerate the lie that labor is worth less than a living wage, that a hard day's work is something to be ashamed of, that the farmers and workers of this country do not deserve the love and thanks of all the people and the wealth that they produce.

We will not tolerate the falsehood that says political power should concentrate in cities far away from our homes and farms, that the common people are not to be trusted with the business of their own government.

We will attack, unceasingly and without reserve, all those who maintain the corrupt monopoly of capital, who seek to concentrate the wealth of our society in the hands of a privileged few.

This country belongs to the people. It belongs to the farmers and teamsters and fruit pickers, the miners and ranchers, small business owners and entrepreneurs, teachers and medical staff, to all the working people of this state.

This is your government. This is your party. And we are not going to give it up!

Just this week, the parliament is poised to pass an extension of the 2020 farm bill to provide much-needed support and economic relief to the farmers of this state.

This is only the latest measure which your government has passed to support your farmers and ranchers in the last four years, and it will not be the last.

The Labor party has put forward these measures because we are the party of the farmers of this state. We are the party of the small towns and rural areas, the out-of-the-way places far from the big cities on the coasts.

Other parties say they represent our rural communities —but their representation never seems to account for much after election day. Their list of achievements is emptier than their list of victories —and they don't have many of those either.

At the end of the day, there is only one party that is working for you in Denver and Salt Lake City, and that is the Labor party.

It was the Labor party who passed the Rural Health Act to build more hospitals and hire more doctors in rural areas.

It was the Labor party who raised the funds to expand rural broadband internet service.

It was the Labor party who votes to fund your schools according to enrollment, so that rural schools have the money they need to guarantee to every student a quality education, instead of concentrating all of the funding in rich districts as they do in other regions.

It was the Labor party who exempted farmland from taxation, so that no farmer has a cent to pay in property taxes to Denver or to Salt Lake City.

Lately the other parties have been harping on about transportation —but it was the Labor party who passed the Transportation Expansions/Connections Act to put control of transportation policy in the hands of local communities.

The great idea of the Labor party is that communities know their needs better than a select committee of career bureaucrats deliberating on the other end of the continent —and we will always defend the right of small towns and rural areas to have control of their own tax dollars.

So when I say the Labor party is the party of the farmers and rural dwellers, I am not making promises for the distant future. I am telling you the facts of the here and now.

We will never give up, we will never concede, until every Utahan has the right to live free from want and persecution. We will fight on to the end.

There is a great day of reckoning coming. No-one can prevent it.

When it does, the people of Utah will have a choice to make. They can move forward with Labor. Or they can languish in the doldrums of neoliberal misrule.

I believe when that days comes, the people of Utah will stand behind the party that has always done right by them.

I believe you are going to elect Amanda Young the next governor of this state. And you are going to elect a Labor majority along with her in the legislature!

You are doing a remarkable thing here in Utah.

You are endeavoring to create what has never existed before on the face of the Earth: an equitable society.

When I say this, I am not talking about prim intellectuals' high hopes for the future. I am talking about facts.

The farmers in Uintah county are some of the most prosperous anywhere in the country. And that is entirely to the credit of the policies of the Labor party.

In a few days, your parliament in Denver will vote to extend the 2020 farm bill. This bill will provide $100 million to farmers here in Utah and across Frémont who will sell their produce to the commonwealth at cost.

This is in addition to the $350 million which your government has spent since 2018 to help farmers suffering from drought, and the more than $10 million in subsidies paid out to small farmers since 2019.

The effect of these measures is that you in Utah have higher incomes and enjoy a higher standard of living than your neighbors east of the Mississippi. This has been achieved without raising taxes on working class families and without making cuts to essential services.

When the parliament passed the property tax bill last year, your government insisted that farmland be exempted from the tax —and we got what we asked for. Today in Utah, the bottom 90% of landowners do not pay one cent in property taxes to Denver or to Salt Lake City, and no farmer will ever owe a cent in property taxes on their farms so long as I am your first minister.

The policy of the Labor party is that no farmer and no small town should live in poverty while the rich and large corporations are raking in profits. That is because the Labor party is the party of the farmers and the working people of Utah. We are the party of peace, prosperity, and home rule.

We cannot achieve an equitable society while liars and cheaters sit in the halls of our government. That is why I have called on your legislature to impeach Mr. Udall for his hideous betrayal. We are going to convict him, and we are going to throw him out of office!

But it is not enough to accuse corrupt politicians. We must destroy corruption wherever it exists: in politics and in business.

They made their purpose clear in their opening remarks of this campaign. Their goal is to defeat the Labor party and the New Great Society, and replace it with neoliberal piffle. This is what they tell the people of Utah in their own words.

Any idiot with a car and $20 in change can go to Manila, or Whiterocks, or Jensen and make brave promises about what they will do with power. But history tells a different story.

The Labor party does not have to make promises because we are actually working for the people of Utah. And we do not intend to quit!

The people of Utah are intelligent people. They are not so easily taken in by Eastern frillery.

That is why I believe you are going to elect a Labor government on May 29.

You are going to make Amanda Young the next governor of this state! And you are going to elect a Labor majority along with her in the legislature!

The opposition leaders make many brave claims about their commitment to the farmers of this state.

They say that if you only elect them into office, they will pass a great farm bill that will help out the farmers here in Duchesne county.

I want to know, if the opposition is so keen to help all of you, where were they in 2020 when we passed the Feed Frémonters Act? Where were they when we passed the 2019 farm bill, or the Frémont Farm Maintenance Act?

Every piece of legislation to help the farmers of this state in the last four years has been proposed by the Labor party and passed by a Labor government. Not once have the opposition shown any interest in helping the farmers here in Utah or in any state of the commonwealth —until this campaign.

I will leave it to you to decide where the opposition got their sudden interest in passing a farm bill.

Perhaps the opposition will say they have always supported these measures. But it is not enough to be in favor of good policy in secret. Government requires leadership, and it requires the courage to state your convictions openly in all seasons, and not just when there is an election up for grabs.

The truth of the matter is there is only one party with any commitment to the farmers of this state, and that is the Labor party!

When I say this, I do not ask you to take me at my word. Any person has only to look to the history of the last four years to see I am telling the truth.

But when you look at the record, you will see that the small towns of Utah have ever had but one friend in politics, and that is the Labor party!

It was the Labor party who raised the money to improve rural infrastructure and rural broadband internet service.

It was the Labor party who voted to base public school funding on enrollment, so that rural districts like the one here in Duchesne have the money they need to guarantee every student a world-class education, instead of concentrating all of the funding in rich areas like the opposition do in their own region.

These are the facts of the situation. They are stubborn things.

No number of milk-carton speeches will change the fact that it is the Labor party that has been fighting for you for the last four years. The opposition have squandered every opportunity they have ever had to help the farmers and the small towns of Utah.

The people of Utah are intelligent people. They are not going to be taken in by promises that have no basis in fact.

What are the issues at stake in this campaign?

The opposition say it is farm issues. They say that if you will only put them into office, they will pass a great farm bill that will help out the farmers here in Duchesne county.

The opposition never seem to run out of promises. But they are awfully hard-up for facts.

In the last three years the Denver parliament has passed three large farm bills. Not one of them was written by a member of the opposition.

Every piece of legislation to help the farmers which has ever been considered in Denver was proposed by the Labor party and passed by a Labor government.

It was the Labor party who passed the 2018 bill to spend $350 million to help drought-stricken farmers.

It was the Labor party who passed the 2019 farm bill that has paid out more than $10 million in subsidies to small farmers in the last two years.

It was the Labor party who passed the Feed Frémonters Act so that any farmer in Utah can sell their produce that they cannot sell at market to the commonwealth government at cost.

This last measure has been the difference between failure and breaking even for many farmers in the last year. It is the reason why Frémont's farmers are the most prosperous in the country, while other regions continue to bleed them dry with oppressive taxes.

In a few days your government will vote to renew the Feed Frémonters Act and spend an additional $100,000 for the relief of small farmers in 2021.

So you see that when the opposition claim to represent the farmers of this state, they are taking you for a ride. And you know who will be left holding the bill.

I say the farmers of Utah have ever had but one friend in politics, and that is the Labor party!

The Labor party does not ask for your vote based on promises for the distant future. We are campaigning on facts.

When you look at the record yourselves, you will see that the Labor party is the party of the farmers and the small towns of Utah. We are the party of peace, prosperity, and home rule.

When the opposition leaders come here, they tell you exactly who they are. They are Southerners and neo-liberals —creatures of the Nyman swamps. Their idea of government is that the common people should step back and let the so-called experts have control.

We do not want government by the elite class. And we certainly do not want a government of the Federalist Rich Man's party.

When you vote the Labor ticket you are not voting only for me. You are voting for yourselves.

That is why I believe that when you mail your ballot on May 29, you are going to vote the Labor ticket straight.

You know the opposition are riding high in this state. The have heard from the pundits and the professional political class that you here in Carbon County are about to desert the Labor party over the recent unpleasantness. They believe than in a few weeks time, you are going to put them in charge of the government in Salt Lake City.

The source of these predictions is that every one of the opposition leaders and their friends in the media have grown up in the East. Easterners are a rootless people; they have no concept of loyalty. It therefore seems natural to them that you should throw out the party that has fought for you and bled for you day after day for the last four years and never give it a second thought.

But I know the people of Utah better than that. I know that the people of Utah are an intelligent people. They are not going to be taken in by promises they get from the Southern surrogates of the opposition parties.

I know that when they look at the history of the last four years, they will see what I have repeated again and again in the course of this campaign: the Labor party is the party of the farmers and the small towns of Utah. We are the party of peace, prosperity, and home rule.

It is so good to be here in Emory county and to have a chance to speak with all you fine people, and to hear what are your concerns for your state in the immediate future.

I have often said it does my heart good to be among the honest people of the West, and that is never more true than today.

Many of your politicians will campaign only in the large cities and neglect the rural areas. But I always like to come out here and hear directly from the people who will decide this election —that is the people in the small towns and rural areas.

The opposition claim to care about the small towns. Their leaders have made brave promises of all the riches they will shower on rural Utahans if they will only vote for them.

But you know it is not the opposition who have been the voice of rural areas in parliament. That is the Labor party and the Labor government in Denver.

Earlier this year, the Labor government passed the Rural Health Act to build more hospitals and hire more doctors in rural areas.

In February we had a member of the opposition elected who said he was in favor of solving the rural health crisis. But when the time came to vote on the bill which my government proposed, he was nowhere to be found! In the end he resigned his office and fled the country, and had to be replaced.

This is how the opposition parties represent rural Utahans. They make brave promises when they are candidates. But if ever they get into office, an army of Egyptians on their heels could not move them to act.

This is why I do not believe the pundits when they say you are about to elect an opposition government in this state. I know the people of Utah are too intelligent to be taken in by Eastern frillery.

The opposition say if you elect them, they will represent the small towns and rural areas of Utah.

They have had many opportunities to prove this in the last four years, and they have squandered all of them.

I will tell you what I am talking about.

Just a few weeks ago, parliament voted to pass the Rural Health Act. This bill, which I wrote, will spend $2 billion in 2021 to build more hospitals and hire more doctors in rural areas.

There are two opposition members in the current parliament. Neither of them voted for the rural health bill.

One of those members had campaigned on solving the rural health crisis. But when the time came, he did not even show up for the vote.

The other said nothing at all about rural health. When the bill was introduced, he was silent. When it was brought to a vote, he was silent. In the end he did not vote for it.

This is the party that wants to represent the small towns and rural areas of Utah!

They have made many promises in the course of this campaign. But we see what they really mean when they get into office.

There is one party that has consistently come down on the side of rural Utahans, and that is the Labor party!

I am eternally grateful to the people of this city for the hospitality they have shown me, and for the kindness and openness of heart with which they have welcomed me into their homes and shops, their schools and manufactories. They are grand people, and I am sorry my stay here is to be so short.

I have often said it does my heart good to be among the people of the West. I say it again now, and you know that I mean what I say. As I always mean what I say.

I understand that you have all had a visit from Wicked Weatherboy, who is one of the most dishonest men alive in Atlasia today. He can only set foot in this country when the most vicious and contemptible lies begin to pour from his mouth, and I am sorry to say his conduct of the last few days has been very bad indeed.

I know that he and all the other liars and cheaters in the opposition will be full of rage that I have told you this, because their hopes for success in Utah are predicated on their ability to confuse and deceive the people. But I cannot allow this. I have sworn an oath to preserve, protect, and defend the commonwealth of Frémont: and the rank dishonesty which we have had from Wicked Weatherboy of the last few days is entirely at odds with what is the interest of the people of Utah.

When I was in Logan earlier this week, I said the Labor party must declare war, not against the lies of one governor only, but against all corruption wherever it exists. We must denounce, root out, and destroy corruption in all its forms —with fire and sword we must destroy it, and sow the earth with salt so that it may never take root again.

When Mr. Udall lied to the people of Utah for personal gain, he betrayed the ideals of the New Great Society. He betrayed his constituents, and he betrayed the Labor party who elected him. For this, he has been cast aside —his career in public life is over —and he will soon be run out of office in disgrace. This is the punishment which befits a traitor to the cause of labor.

But Mr. Udall is not the only exemplar of the culture of corruption which pervades this country. We see his image in the fat corporate executives who grow rich on the labor of others. We see it, indeed, in the conduct of the Southern opposition surrogates who seek to profit by the misfortune of the people of Utah.

The opposition leaders were full of glee when the news of Mr. Udall's betrayal reached the presses. They were lusting after a chance to cut the throat of the Labor party in this state, and in their eagerness they shocked even their own sensibilities. Their chief, Wicked Weatherboy, was forced to go before the people and apologize for the grossly unfair claims he had made with respect to the character of the Labor party and to me personally. He then proceeded to make an explanation for his position. Every part of this explanation was flatly untrue or misleading in the extreme.

It is for this reason that I call his party the Dishonest Alliance.

Wicked Weatherboy has said, for instance, that myself and the other leaders of the Labor party were too slow to condemn Mr. Udall. In fact, myself, my colleague Mr. Scott, and the chair of the Labor party all denounced Mr. Udall and called for his impeachment barely more than an hour after news of his malfeasance became known. We would have done so sooner, but the editors of the Dispatch gave us no forewarning of the story they intended to print, and as I and they have stated already, none of us had any knowledge of Mr. Udall's misdeeds before that story was printed.

Wicked Weatherboy then said the only true thing in his entire remarks, that the Labor party should receive credit for quickly and uniformly denouncing Mr. Udall and calling for his removal, and that the impeachment proceedings —which the Labor party and the Labor nominee for governor are leading —should not be politicized. He promised that he would soon leave the state and not continue to harp after his false narrative of events regarding the downfall of the governor. We now know this was another lie.

Just yesterday, the Dishonest Alliance have released an ad, produced by Wicked Weatherboy, which attempts to tie the misdeeds of Mr. Udall to the Labor party and to me personally. I will not deign to repeat its charges here. The spirit and effect of the words which Wicked Weatherboy has written is to accuse the Labor party and me personally of having colluded with Mr. Udall, or being somehow otherwise complicit in his malfeasance.

Have you ever heard such an outrageous slander?

From the moment we learned of Mr. Udall's wrongdoing, myself and the whole Labor party were unanimous in denouncing him. We immediately called for him to be removed from office, and we launched the investigation to discover the extent of his deceptions.

I have said on several occasions that my government has no tolerance for corruption to any degree. I will say to you, what I said to the good people in Logan with respect to Mr. Udall: he is no friend of mine, I denounce him, and I disavow his administration.

Neither I nor any other leader of the Labor party had any foreknowledge of Mr. Udall's corruption. In this sense, we as well have been betrayed, by a man who has sabotaged our party's fortunes by his misconduct. Our hurt does not approach the hurt of the people of Utah, and it is for this reason that we have worked so strenuously to remove Mr. Udall from office.

In light of these facts, why does Wicked Weatherboy persist in attacking the Labor party in this manner? Simply, because he knows that if he has to fight this campaign on the issues, he will lose.

He knows that his party's record on rural issues is one of the worst of any party. He knows that his party's transportation program is essentially a reiteration of what has already been passed by the Labor party.

The central element of his party's transportation program in this county is a train to nowhere. These are not the hallmarks of a winning campaign.

Wicked Weatherboy knows that the people of Utah will never vote for him while they are focussed on the important issues that affect their daily lives. So he has invented a controversy, by attempting to tar the Labor party for actions they had no part in and roundly condemn.

When you vote the Dishonest Alliance ticket, you are not getting a fresh start. You are getting a second dose of the same corrupt politics practiced by the soon-to-be ex-governor: a politics that is willing to lie and cheat and mislead the people for personal gain.

The people of Utah are an intelligent people. They are not so easily taken in by these lies and deceptions.

On May 29 they are going to vote for the party who have always had their backs, who have always looked out for the farmers and the working people of this state. And they are going to send the Dishonest Alliance packing.

We did not seek this fight. But we will not hesitate to defend ourselves when we are the target of dishonest and deceitful attacks.

We are going to win this election, and we are going to throw out the dishonest politicians in all parties once and for all!

We are all very sorry for the people of Panguitch, who have just had a visit from Wicked Weatherboy. He had many hard words for me, but none of them were very interesting, and I will admit I did not listen for very long.

In amongst his long and bizarre list of grievances, he called all of you who are members of the Labor party zombies. And he predicted that the people of Utah will shortly install his party in office, because he knows many big words.

I do not know what he meant to imply by this statement. But I assure him I have many more words than he cares to hear!

If my speech is to plain for his intellectual Eastern pedigree, I suggest he go back where he came from. We certainly do not want him here!

Wicked Weatherboy seems not to know the difference between writing poetry and running a government. So I will spell it out for him.

This election is not about words. This election is about facts.

When the people of Utah examine the facts for themselves, they will see that the record of the last four years recommends the election of the Labor party candidates.

It is the Labor party that has come down consistently on the side of the farmers —by raising $350 million for the relief of farmers suffering from drought, by raising another $10 1/2 million since 2019 in subsidies for small farmers, by passing the 2020 farm bill to bail out the farmers during the pandemic, and by breaking the monopoly of Southern big agriculture.

It is the Labor party that has come down consistently on the side of the small towns and rural areas —by investing in rural infrastructure, rural schools, rural hospitals, and rural vaccination.

It is the Labor party that has come down consistently on the side of the working people —by protecting the right of every worker to join a union, to be paid a fair wage, and to sue their employer when they are being cheated.

It is the Labor party that has come down consistently on the side of working families —by establishing paid family leave, better schools, better childcare, and by eliminating income and property taxes for middle and working class families.

The Dishonest Alliance have no answer to these achievements. Their solution is to steal our accomplishments and pass them off as their own.

When he was in Cedar City today, Wicked Weatherboy said that if a Dishonest Alliance government is elected, they will pay for local infrastructure out of the state budget. He presented this recommendation to the people of Cedar City as proof of his commitment to local control of transportation.

This is an excellent suggestion. I am so strongly in favor of it, that I already passed it into law over a year ago!

This is, in fact, the spitting image of the Public Transportation Expansions/Connections Act which I signed last year. But Wicked Weatherboy presented this as his own invention!

You see now why I call his party the "Dishonest Alliance."

He then said that Labor cannot be trusted to deliver on our promises to the people of Utah, because we have done so many times in the past.

I do not know what sort of philosophy this is, but perhaps it is because I do not know enough words.

Wicked Weatherboy says his party is full of words. But they are hard-up for actions.

In the last regional elections, the Dishonest Alliance campaigned on solving the rural health crisis. But when the Rural Health Act came up in parliament, they did not even show up for the vote.

That is the sort of leadership you get when you vote for the Dishonest Alliance.

I say that the people of Utah are an intelligent people. And they are not going to be taken in by Wicked Weatherboy and the "radical neoliberal" opposition parties.

Everyone wants better infrastructure. Not everyone understands how to get there.

Dear old Wicked Weatherboy has been harassing the Western people for months about his hugely expensive, unrealistic, Eastern elitist's transport plan. His latest idea is to build a train to nowhere across miles of desert at a cost to the taxpayer of millions of dollars.

The Labor party have a different idea. We are not so impressed by a plan dreamed up in a boardroom somewhere in South Carolina. We are in favor of practical and effective infrastructure spending that meets the needs of actual Utahans here in San Juan county and across this state!

We are not against rail altogether. But we want it to be built in places where commuter rail is efficient.

That is why we support finishing the Frémont Rail line through to Salt Lake City, and we support the expansion of the line to Provo.

Here in San Juan county, we support investing in local projects to repave roads and bridges, expand bus services, and encourage production of cheap electric vehicles to keep costs for the ordinary citizen low. We are in favor of local leadership on transport issues —and unlike the Dishonest Alliance, who only make promises, we have the record to back it up!

Last year the Denver parliament passed the Public Transportation Expansions/Connections Act to fund local transportation projects out of the regional treasury. This proposal ensures that localities have the resources they need to prosper without concentrating power in a central committee in Nyman or burdening the people with oppressive taxes.

The Labor party has kept its promises on transport. And we will continue to keep them.

The Dishonest Alliance say they are in favor of the local approach. But their record tells a different story.

In the last general election, the Dishonest Alliance candidates for parliament campaigned on solving the rural health crisis. But they did not vote for the Rural Health Act —they were nowhere to be found! If they do not keep their promises to rebuild rural hospitals, the people of Utah can hardly believe they will keep their promises to rebuild rural infrastructure.

The lying, cheating Dishonest Alliance do not know when to quit! Since their plan to build a train to nowhere has inspired four-year-old boys everywhere and put hundreds of unemployed comedians back to work, they have been desperately searching for a new gimmick with which to distract the public. They believed they had found it in class sizes in public schools.

I do not know if you have seen this ad which the Dishonest Alliance picture writers released yesterday. In it they promise to reduce class sizes in public schools to a maximum of thirty students per teacher if only the people of Utah will elect their candidates.

I know you are all growing wise to the Dishonest Alliance routine here in Utah. And you will not be surprised to learn that this is all, totally, bunk.

The Labor party has always made delivering quality public education a top priority in all our years in power. That is why my government passed the Public Education Act, now more than four years ago, to keep the student-teacher ratio in Frémont public schools at or below twenty to one!

Your government has spent $100 million dollars a year every year since 2017 to do far more than the Dishonest Alliance are proposing. They are not only late, but far less ambitious.

So in light of this fact, what are we to conclude about the startling factual inaccuracy of the latest opposition television spot?

Either the opposition leaders are so completely ignorant of the actual conditions in Utah that they cannot even pander properly (this would not be a great surprise)

—or, they are simply liars, who know exactly what the facts are but just do not care.

Can anyone tell me which is worse?

I have come here to Utah because the people of this state are my brothers and sisters. You deserve far better than the inexplicably incompetent campaign the Dishonest Alliance are running.

Their ideas are laughable because they know nothing about Utah to begin with. They do not understand the people, and they do not understand our way of life.

The pollsters say that in spite of all this they are about to walk into the governor's house. But I am not worried.

The people of Utah are an intelligent people. And I know they will never vote for the Dishonest Alliance or any of their crooked candidates.

I believe you are going to elect Amanda Young the next governor of this state. And you are going to elect a Labor majority along with her in the legislature!

When I arrived in this state now eight days ago, I said that we are engaged in the greatest human endeavor. I said that the Labor party must declare a war on corruption, wherever it exists —in business, in politics, and in the press.

The first battle of this war was fought on the floor of the Senate and the House of Commons of this state to remove the lying, cheating ex-governor of this state. We won that fight —thanks to the courage of the people of Utah, our members of all parties in the legislature, and the leadership of Amanda Young, who I know you are all anxious to see.

The second battle is the one you will fight on May 29. That is the fight to run the corrupt, carpetbagging rich man's opposition candidates back to South Carolina.

The opposition leaders have made many brave promises to the people of Utah. Not one of those promises has so far been kept.

They promised to represent the rural communities in this state. But when the opportunity arose to vote to pass the Rural Health Act —an act which will spend $2 billion in 2021 to build more hospitals and hire more doctors in rural areas —they did not even show up for the vote.

They promised to improve rural infrastructure. Their plan to achieve this is to build a train to nowhere that will cross miles of uninhabited desert at a tremendous cost to the taxpayer.

They promised to reduce class sizes. But the plan they put forward is less ambitious than what Labor passed four years ago, and that we have worked closely with local districts here in Utah and across Frémont to implement.

The opposition say they stand for new ideas. But everything they have offered the voters is either a lie, an impracticality, or has simply already been done.

That is why I call them the Dishonest Alliance.

For the last four years, the Labor party has been the steady friend of the farmers and the working people of this state. We passed the Rural Health Act; we renewed the 2020 farm bill, to support farmers struggling in the difficult global economy; we passed the transportation bill to rebuild your roads and bridges.

We passed the Public Education Act to keep the student-to-teacher ratio at or below twenty-to-one, raised teacher pay, ended teaching to the test, and abolished the old corrupt funding formula so that rural districts like the one here in Hanksville get the money they need to provide every child a world-class education.

For all their talk, the Dishonest Alliance have never lifted a finger to help us. They are always the last to charge and the first to retreat. They do not care about us, and they do not understand our way of life.

The people of Utah are beginning to wake up to their lies. They have got the Dishonest Alliance on the run.

In ten days you are going to finally send them back where they came from —back to the swampy bayous of South Carolina, where they cannot bother us anymore.

You are going to elect Amanda Young the next governor of this state. And you are going to elect a Labor majority along with her in the legislature!

The Dishonest Alliance are collapsing all over this state.

We have got them on the run!

They thought they would be able to bamboozle the public with their flashy ads and incredible promises. But the people of Utah are not so easily taken in.

I believe that when the votes are counted, Amanda Young will be elected by a large majority. And it will be thanks to you, the farmers and the working people of Utah!

I have observed many times that the Dishonest Alliance platform is one string of lies after another. This is never more true than when they start talking about rural issues.

In the last general election the Dishonest Alliance candidates campaigned on solving the rural health crisis. But when I proposed the Rural Health Act —a law that orders the commonwealth government to spend $2 billion in 2021 to build more hospitals and hire more doctors in rural areas —they did not vote for it. One of their members, who had made many loud declarations of his dedication to this issue, did not even show up for the vote. He skipped town a short time after and has not been seen since.

If the Dishonest Alliance do not keep their promise to improve rural health, why should we believe they will keep their promise to improve rural infrastructure?

We do not have to ask if they will keep their promise to reduce class sizes. That is because the Labor party has already done this.

Four years ago your government passed the Public Education Act to establish universal preschool, raise teacher pay, and keep the student-to-teacher ratio at or below twenty-to-one. This act was proposed by the Labor party, and successive Labor parliaments have voted to extend it every year since 2018.

So when I say that the Labor party believes in smaller class sizes, I am not talking about some fairytale of the distant future. I am talking about facts.

Frémont's teachers are some of the highest-paid educators in the country, and our school districts are some of the best-funded. That is because we fund districts based on enrollment, so that every school has the money it needs to give every student a world-class education, regardless of whether they are rich or poor, black, white, or brown, urban or rural.

We have the best schools in the country because we trust our teachers to run their classrooms without the interference of big city bureaucrats. We have ended teaching to the test, and we have restored patriotic education in our classrooms.

The Dishonest Alliance would like to take credit for Labor's accomplishments. But while we were building schools in Frémont, they were shutting schools down: three schools that are set to be shuttered in Camden, New Jersey this spring thanks to the Dishonest Alliance governor in that state.

The people of Utah are an intelligent people. I believe they are beginning to wake up to the situation.

I believe you are going to elect Amanda Young the next governor of this state. And you are going to elect a Labor majority along with her in the legislature!

This election is not about promises. It is about facts. It is about the common values we share as Frémonters: integrity, hard work, and commitment to family.

The people of Utah have a choice in this election. And I believe you are going to make the right choice.

When you vote the Labor ticket you are not only voting for Amanda. You are voting for your own interests.

When the farmers of this state appealed to Denver during the worst pandemic in more than a century, it was the Labor party who answered them. We saw to it that they could sell to the commonwealth at fair prices what they could not sell at market, and so saved many thousands of farmers from failure.

Last week parliament voted to extend the 2020 farm bill for another year, to pay $100 million to farmers here in Utah and across Frémont who have suffered due to the pandemic. This bill was proposed by a Labor member of parliament, Mr. Bessell, and it was passed by a Labor government.

In the last four years I have kept every promise I made to you. I ask no-one to take me at my word. When I say the Labor party is the party of the farmers, I am not making promises for the distant future: I am telling you the facts.

The Labor party has always been the steadfast friend of the farmers and rural communities of Utah. And the farmers are going to need a friend before this year is over.

For four years we have fought for the small farmer against Southern big agriculture and the corrupt Eastern special interests. And we are not going to quit!

We are going to create a New Great Society in Utah. We will not rest until every Utahan has the right to live under their own roof and eat bread off their own table.

Those are the values we are fighting for in this campaign.

I believe that the pundits who have predicted Labor's defeat are going to have a big surprise on Sunday morning.

It is the people of Utah who will decide this election, and not the media or the carpetbagging politicians.

On Saturday we are going to send the Dishonest Alliance a message.

I can't tell you how very much I appreciate all of you being here today. I have always been able to depend on the friendship and generosity of the people of Utah, and I see today that generosity is in no short supply.

Our victory in the late general election is a victory for the Labor party and the people of Frémont. It is by this victory that we will continue our efforts to build a New Great Society in the West —a society free from want, built upon the values of integrity, hard work, and commitment to family that all Frémonters share.

I believe that in the next few days we are going to have another victory. On Saturday we are going to elect Amanda Young the next governor of this state! And when we do, we will have proved once and for all that this country belongs to the people, and not to the slick Eastern money-grubbers and the preening perfumed politicians.

I have said from the start of this campaign the people of Utah have a choice in this election between two parties with two fundamentally different ideas of government.

The Labor party is the party of the farmers and the working families of Utah. The Dishonest Alliance is the party of the rich and special interests.

That other fellow does not like me to say that. But when you look at the facts, you will see the truth of what I say.

Truth, incidentally, is not something the Dishonest Alliance are big on.

They say that if you elect them, they will keep class sizes in public schools below thirty. They do not mention that the Labor party has acted years ago to keep class sizes below twenty.

They say that if you elect them, they will cut taxes for working families. They do not mention that the Labor party has eliminated your taxes altogether.

They say that if you elect them, they will lay hundreds of miles of track all over this state. The centerpiece of their plan is a train to nowhere, which they propose to build at the expense to the taxpayer of hundreds of millions of dollars. This is a plan which even the opposition leader in parliament calls "incredibly dumb."

The running theme across all of their television spots and public appearances is the endemic dishonesty which has marked their campaign for the very beginning. Either they have no idea what are the actual conditions in this state, or they are all incurable liars. I will leave it to you to decide which is the worst case.

The Labor party does not deal in promises for the distant future. We deal exclusively in facts.

Just last week we passed the extension of the 2020 farm bill. This bill will pay $100 million to farmers here in Utah and across Frémont to sell to the commonwealth at fair prices the part of their crop they cannot sell at market. By this measure, we will save many hundreds and thousands of farmers from bankruptcy, as we did last year in the heart of the pandemic.

In March we passed the Rural Health Act to spend $2 billion in 2021 to build more hospitals and hire more doctors in rural areas. This will begin to address the rural health crisis which has festered in much of the country for the last several years.

As we speak, our men and women are at work extending the Central Line through to Salt Lake City. Last year we voted to spend $12 billion a year for the support of local infrastructure projects here in Cedar City and across Utah.

All of these expenditures will be paid for with a tax on the wealthiest 10% of Frémonters. No Utahan who earns up to $125,000 a year will owe a cent in income taxes, and no farmer nor the bottom 90% of residential landowners will owe a cent in property taxes.

There is great work to be done in Utah in the next six months. It will require every ounce of discipline and intelligence we can muster.

The question for the voters in this election is whether you would entrust that responsibility to the party that has kept every promise it has ever made to you, that has done battle every day for the farmers and the working families of Utah —or to the party that tells lie after lie, whose leaders have no idea what is going on in this state, and that is run by and for the Eastern elites without consideration for the needs of actual Utahans.

The people of Utah are an intelligent people. I believe that you are going to make the right choice.

On Saturday you are going to elect Amanda Young the next governor of this state. And you are going to elect a Labor majority in the legislature!

That is why we passed the Rural Health Act to hire more doctors and build more hospitals in rural areas. It is why we voted to expand rural broadband internet service, and why we voted to give more money to rural schools, more money to rural roads and bridges, more money to rural small businesses and small farmers.

Today Utahans enjoy the highest standard of living of anyone anywhere in the country. You earn the highest wages and work the shortest hours. You have among the highest rates of internet access, even in out-of-the-way places. You have the best-funded schools, and the lowest taxes of any region in Atlasia.

So when I say Labor is the party of working families, I am not making promises for the distant future. I am talking about facts.

There is great work to be done in the next six months. It will require every ounce of commitment and intelligence we have to do it.

We are going to reopen the economy. It is already happening as we speak. We are going to get our children back to school, and we are going to build back stronger than ever before.

The people of Utah are an intelligent people. They understand the situation we are in. They know that the leadership we need to achieve peace and prosperity in the next decade has only ever come from the Labor party.

I believe on Saturday you are going to vote for the party who has always been on the side of the working families of Utah.

The people of Utah have a choice in this election. It is a choice between two parties with two fundamentally different ideas of government.

An excellent example of this difference is our respective records on public education.

Four years ago, the Labor party passed the Mann Act in this region to increase teacher pay and increase funding for essential school services. Included in this act was a provision to cap the student-to-teacher ratio at or below twenty-to-one.

To achieve this, we spent $300 billion in the first year and $150 billion every year since in order to ensure a sufficient number of teachers at fair wages to accommodate these small class sizes.

Last week the Dishonest Alliance proposed their own plan. They said that if the people of Utah vote for them on Saturday, they will set the teacher-to-student ratio at thirty-to-one.

Not only is this plan profoundly unambitious, it is a large step backwards from the policy which the Labor party enacted four years ago.

The Dishonest Alliance plan would, in effect, increase the number of students in each classroom by a factor of ten. This would mean fewer teachers and less individual instruction time for students in every classroom in Utah.

The Dishonest Alliance leaders were swiftly informed of this fact. Yet still they continue to campaign on passing their thirty-to-one plan.

We are left with no alternative but to assume that the Dishonest Alliance know the implications of their proposal, and are campaigning specifically on increasing the student-to-teacher ratio.

It is either that, or their leaders are so ignorant they do not know the facts of the situation even when they are stated to them in plain English. I will leave it to you to determine which is the worse alternative.

The Labor party is campaigning on facts. The Dishonest Alliance are campaigning on fictions that, if they were elected, would create the very problems they say they are trying to solve.

The people of Utah are an intelligent people. I believe they are coming to understand the situation, and after Saturday I will not have to say anything more about voting the Labor ticket.

That is because you are going to elect Amanda Young the next governor of this state! And you are going to elect a Labor majority along with her in the legislature!

INT. GYM – DAY

FADE IN on the interior an elementary school gym, where a class of fourth-graders are standing in a circle. One of the students holds a red rubber BALL. At the sound of a whistle, he throws the ball to the student opposite him, who catches it, shouts "One!," and throws it to the next student, who shouts "Two!," and so on, up to "Nineteen!"

The last student, who is somewhat smaller in stature than the others, begins to shout "Twenty!" but fumbles the ball and drops it. The whistle sounds again.


TEACHER
All right, guys, take five. Get some water.

The group breaks up, except for Number Twenty, who stays put. The TEACHER approaches him and gets down on his level. There is a familiarity between them: we feel that they have spoken about this before.

TEACHER
Don't worry about it, buddy. You'll get the hang of it.

TWENTY
I always drop it. Always.

TEACHER
You just need to practice. Want to try again?

The student nods. The TEACHER picks up the ball and steps back a few paces.

TEACHER
Ready?

He throws the ball to TWENTY, who catches it for the first time. His face lights up. At that exact moment, the gym doors fly open, and a man in a trim suit with a clipboard walks into the gym.

BUREAUCRAT
Congratulations, Brigham Young Elementary! By act of the DA government, a thirty-student cap is now in effect for all classrooms in Utah.

TEACHER
My class has twenty students.

BUREAUCRAT (concerned)
Yes, we noticed that. Not to worry! The governor has agreed to add students to your class you get you up to quota.

TEACHER
But isn't the point to ...

Ten more students storm into the gym, knocking the others out of their way. There aren't enough supplies to go around: one of them knocks the ball out of TWENTY's hands and tosses it to his compatriot. One of them shouts to the TEACHER

NEW STUDENT
Hey, Mr. B!

TEACHER
Sam? Aren't you in Mrs. Harper's class?

BUREAUCRAT
Oh, Mrs. Harper doesn't work here anymore. With these new class sizes, we don't need so many teachers.

The new students are now pelting TWENTY with balls they took from the original class.

BUREAUCRAT
Isn't this better?

At that moment, the BUREAUCRAT is hit in the head by a flying dodgeball. He turns on his heel, swearing.

BUREAUCRAT
Those ungrateful little ... !

TEACHER
Don't blame me, I voted for Labor.

As the gym descends into chaos, we cut to black.

I've been a conservative just about as long as I can remember. Dad always used to say it was up to us to provide for our families and pull ourselves up by our bootstraps, and that's the way I've tried to live.

I always used to vote the Federalist ticket ... but when the Labor party got into government here, everything started to get better. You got the roads are being repaved —used to hit potholes 'bout every twenty feet on this road —we've been driving for thirty minutes, haven't hit one. (laughs)

The schools are better: my grandson is in a class with eighteen other kids. ... The hospital is going to reopen ... we don't have to drive down to Cedar City just to see the doctor.

I think the reason I started voting for Labor is, they care about these communities. They care about the people here. They don't talk about doing things: they do it!
