He must really not be happy in Congress. I’m curious if Pelikan drops out now, after winning the DFL endorsement. I have doubts about Ellison winning statewide, including in the primary

It looks like Omar might be a strong frontrunner after all. None of her main opponents even have campaign websites set up, but Omar released a list of 12 local state legislators & Minneapolis city councillors who endorsed her bid for Congress.

https://www.ilhanomar.com/endorsements/

Or Ellison gave her advance notice, which is likely. The AG probably gave Ellison advance notice, too. Dominos fall.

Yep, probably

She also voted against a bill banning female genital mutilation, there needs to be a concerted effort to defeat her.

Hopefully she gets demolished in the primary.

There’s a line of thinking among a very tiny minority of kook-left types that nobody in the West can under any circumstances criticize any “global south” cultural practice no matter how barbaric or inhuman it may appear at face value because something something white supremacy colonialism.

That being said, I doubt that’s what drove Ms. Omar’s vote. Of course she deserves a chance to explain herself, but even if it’s something as benignly naive as the comments in the quote BRYD shared suffice to say I would find that an insufficient answer

OK now that I'm at home and able to read that article more in detail and look it up, this is in fact a nothingburger. Omar voted in favor of the bill: http://www.house.leg.state.mn.us/votes/votes.asp?ls_year=90&billnum=HF2621&session_number=0&year=2017&id=285

And the article does in fact state that, even if maybe slightly confusingly worded:

So this is either a confirmation bias confusion at best, an act of blatant dishonesty at worst.

I'm not supporting her in the primary, but this is not the the way to go about this.

I’m glad you submitted this correction.

If Omar wins the primary (and with that, the general), Congress should refuse to seat her.

Why exactly? Serious question. Besides one questionable anti Israel tweet what exactly has she done that would merit that extraordinary step?

Seriously. I don’t care for her but if she’s elected she should obviously be seated

Referring to Omar as the “Democratic Steve King” or part of the “anti-Semitic left” is so absurd, and in no way has anything she done been even remotely hateful or discriminatory, let alone when compared to today’s Republican Party. It’s remarkable to see progressives who claim to support diversity in perspective and representation get weak in the knees the moment Republicans get triggered by a hijab.

It's understandable if unfortunate for the well demonstrated bigots and hacks on this forum to spill their thinly veiled Islamophobia and anti-blackness here, but MAJOR opprobrium to the people doing the same who aren't the usual suspects, IMO.

Yeah, it's so Islamophobic to be against someone who says anti-Semitic garbage like "Israel has hypnotized the world". Roll Eyes

I'm not the one taking one person with a headcovering and treating them like an existential threat to democracy...

That’s... not what most people are arguing. Speaking for myself at least, her tweets can at best charitably suggest that she’s not ready for primetime. Of course the same can be said of many politicians and the people of MN-5 will make their decision in August

A full page of arguments over her anti semitism (or lack thereof) and no one is concerned that she's all for female circumcision. That's far more disturbing than a couple of par for the course tweets.

This has been debunked.

I am thrilled with this result. Ilhan Omar will make a great congresswoman, and her tweet is great! Can't wait to have our first Muslim woman as a member of congress, this country is progressing fast!

Rashida Tlaib strikes me as better, as far as Muslim women go.

Meh, it’s surprisingly not an unpopular opinion to hold among the activist left, that extremists need rehabilitation rather than the death sentence/life in prison.

Whether or not it’s a popular position with the leftiest activists is irrelevant, it’s a horrible look to most voters and - I must say - as someone else pointed out quite patronizing to the wonderful Somali-American community

Probably because Omar dislikes how BDS advocates for nonviolent solutions. She wants violent "solutions".
[Citation extremely needed]

Yeah seriously I’m not a big Omar or BDS fan but that was close to slanderous

I mean this stance arguably makes her more pro-Israel than Ellison
