If Joe Lieberman was a Republican running in 2008, probably, despite the fact he apparently was pro-choice and pro-gay marriage.

Not sure about today's Republican Party, though.

Romney had no problem winning the primary as a Mormon, and most evangelicals have a more favorable view of Judaism than Mormonism.

Romney got very lucky in 2012 that his toughest opposition was Newt Gingrich and Rick Santorum. If say... Mike Huckabee, Sarah Palin, Mitch Daniels...or hell, even Donald Trump had run, Romney would not have been the Republican nominee.
