Has anyone jumped in as Hillary yet?

I remember doing a 2004 game run by NHI where I was Hillary...so I want to see if I can actually win the nomination this time around.

Otherwise, I'll play as John Kerry.

Im already Kerry

Then, if no one's taken Hillary (which isn't quite clear) I'll happily take her.

That person decided to take Gore so Hillary should be open

Great. I just want confirmation from the GM that I can enter as Hillary...

Hillary Clinton-announcement speech

September 30, 2003, Chappaqua, New York

I am delighted to announce that I am running for President in 2004. I have long held the dream that I would be the first female President, and in this Republican field, I see an opportunity.

I know people will say that I am not ready, or that the country is not ready for a woman to be President. I will point out that when Margaret Thatcher ran for Leader of the British Conservative Party, did people say that Britain wasn't ready for female Prime Minister? Or that when Benazir Bhutto was campaigning for Prime Minister of Pakistan, did people say that Pakistan wasn't ready for a female Prime Minister. I have no doubt that we are ready for a female President and beyond that, I'm confident that I'll win.

When will this be starting?
Also, what is the primary schedule?

This will start when everyone gets their announcement speeches in, primary dates TBD.

There are people who just won't post announcement speeches (or anything at all), so I'd set a hard start date (maybe time it so the first turn ends halfway between Christmas and New Year's?)

Hillary as a Republican?

Hillary's kind of underestimating her fellow Democrats here. If she can beat Gore, which she thinks she can, she believes can win both the nomination and the General Election....though she was a Goldwater Girl once upon a time, so I could mess with that, if you want Wink

Fred Phelps running in 2004!

"Tonight, I have a very big announcement to make. An announcement, to bring us back into God's light, bring us back from the doorstep of hell we stepped towards when the Democratic Party and this nation embraced the evil glow of *******y, abortion, and divorce. As we all know, ***s and adulterers will burn in hell and they'll want to send all of us to hell too to spread their sin. While President Bush has fought against *** marriage and abortion, he has not fought to stop these evil beasts from spreading their vile hate altogether.   That is why I am seeking the Democratic nomination for President of the United States in 2004, to bring this nation to the ideals which we aspire to have!"

For the record, you are censoring words that don't actually have to be censored on this site (unless there is something about the terms of service I don't know about).

Also, I thought Fred Phelps was a Republican...

Uncensoring them shortly.

Fred Phelps ran in several Democratic state primaries in the 90s.

That doesn't prove he was a Democrat in 2004. People change their party registration all the time.

And I mean, Fred Phelps isn't really going to be allowed on stage, right?

We're just gonna imagine he's outside the building with a megaphone?

Unless he's polling at like 0%, yeah he's going to be onstage.

I do think for the most part we should either ignore him, or try to knock him out early.

About Tom Harkin, Democrats, I have gotten 3 requests for him so far. Should I leave him as a non endorser or keep it with the first person who asked for him?

Depends who's asking.

Other than Hillary, I think Gore would be the most obvious candidate for Harkin to back.

To nerd73. I appreciate you staying in character as Phelps...but even he has more discipline than to start spewing out profanities in front of other candidates at debates.

Keep that in mind next time.

I'd stay with First come First Serve, and then change it later on if need be.

I'm just going to presume by that, that Kerry got Harkin's endorsement. Am I right?

And we've got the first sparks of the 2004 Democratic Primaries!  Tongue

May the best woman win.

Don't kid yourself. It's going to be Hillary.

I don't see any candidate that has a good uncontested base of support.

Let's be real here. Hillary's got more name recognition coming in than any non-Gore candidate, so she should be a top contender at a minimum, barring something going horribly wrong. And if Gore drops out, I'd argue she's the favorite.

Well the fun part about these is that they allow us to change history, and pride comes before a fall.  Kiki
Hillary has Name recognition an what else?

She has at least some semblance of a voting record, and quite frankly, with her high name ID, if Gore drops out/bombs (which looks unlikely, admittedly) she could emerge with nomination relatively easily.

She also could finish in last in Iowa/New Hampshire as well.

We may want to limit endorsements, must games limit to two per turn

I'm holding at four right now. My only complaints are that neither Daschle nor Gephardt would endorse anyone at this point, I'm not sure Ted Kennedy would endorse Dean, let alone anyone at this point, and Madeline Albright would eventually endorse Clinton.

Oh, and here's a link to the article used to make the ad against Shaheen, in case I get a more serious complaint.

I'm fine with Talent dropping out, but can you veto him being shot?

It just seems implausible.

I think we should give the Republicans and the other Democrats a chance to catch up, so far it’s just been myself, Gore, Kerry and Clinton really.

I'm fine with the first turn ending on New Year's Day if necessary.

Did we clarify whether we're using the 2004 or 2008 primary schedule, since the turns seem setup for the 2008 schedule.

We were told 2004, but the way the turn is set up that is in no way correct...unless the GM plans to put D.C later, or disenfranchise them in the primary process.

Jeanne Shaheen / Al Gore - 53.4% (Or the other way, if you prefer Peanut  Mock )
Dick Cheney / Steve Garvey - 46.6%

Please, Hillary's more likely to be the Democratic nominee at this point than Shaheen is.

Question, if the Mod and most players agree to it, can changes be made to the timeline for a candidate?

I'm not the mod, but what is it? If it's something reasonable I wouldn't see why not, but if it's something game changing like Shaheen not running for Senate in 2002 then I'd have to say no.

I'm assuming we won't' let Shaheen run for reelection in 2002 so I can push through a major health care bill that might spice up the game a little, - if not, maybe I'll just transform it into Vermont Care for my 2020 game. Lol.

I doubt she'd be able to get it through because a Republican controlled State legislature

Without releasing too many specifics; it's actually a multiplayer, public-private plan that I think moderate Republicans could back, hence why I might use it in my 2020 game, conversely. Just think it'd make more sense here.

This is the early 2000's I'm not sure if America is really ready for such liberal legislation.

That said Im not against her being reelected Governor and trying to get it to pass. It'd cost her a lot of political clout and maybe burn some bridges, but it'd establish her as a Liberal face.

I'm open to her trying to do this while she's still Governor, but I don't think she should run for reelection, and I can't see her winning the Senate seat in 2002. But she might able to beat Judd Gregg in the Senate race, if she gets out of the Presidential Race early enough, and jumps in the Senate race, plus has a Democrat who can carry New Hampshire atop the ballot (so maybe Gore, Kerry or Clinton), she should beat Gregg.

Kerry has the best chance to win NH...

In terms of the General, Kerry or Gore probably have the best chance.

In terms of a Senate race. If Shaheen ran against Gregg, she'd win, especially if a Democrat carried the state atop the ballot.

If all goes well the Dems could have a nominee as early as March, or as late as at the DNC.

Blue is Gore, Red is Clinton, Yellow is Lincoln, Green is Kerry, and Gray is Shaheen.

Before you jump down my throat about Edwards not winning North Carolina, I think that state essentially ends up in a delegate tie between Edwards, Lincoln and Gore/Clinton, but Lincoln walks away with the popular vote lead, hence why the map is yellow there.
