My dad and I are going for his birthday. Neither of us are gamblers, but there's no shortage of unique entertaining stuff to do out there. They're practically giving the hotel rooms away. Plus, I want to see Death Valley.

I've enjoyed $25 hotel rooms in Vegas without spending a dime in the casino. Although I can't really say Death Valley is all that interesting.

A sense of self-superiority based on something he really doesn't have much, if any, experience with beyond a fourth grade DARE class.

... .
Plus, most of the pot smokers I've known were intolerable, insufferable assholes.

Perhaps you need to get out more Joe. Just a thought.

Interesting.  You don't really know the first thing about me, so don't presume to.

Besides, my views on pot sound pretty similar to yours on casino gambling.  With the exception that I don't think pot should be illegal.  So who's the sheltered nanny statist now?

As noted above, gambling does have a rather huge societal cost. I would have preferred that Nevada have retained a monopoly on it, rather than the practice metastasizing across the Fruited Plain. But yes, I know my views on that are rather eccentric - at least for a non-religious type.

I just was surprised that the pot heads you run into you find to be assholes. That certainly is not my experience.

Same. The pot smokers in my life are all too mellow to be assholes, and are otherwise quite sociable and generous people.

Perhaps Torie is just a bit upset at being lumped into a group of "intolerable, insufferable assholes." Can't say I'm super fond of it either!

Clearly! You don't smoke and you couldn't even remember that I've only smoked twice!

So the most intolerable, insufferable post in this thread belongs to a nonsmoker.

A lot of pot head or burnout friends of mine from years back were annoying.  This isn't inclusive of just smokers or all encompassing mind you, but so many started talking reeeeaaaalllll slooooooow maaaaaannnnn. Many affected some contrived hippie ethics and listen/ed to endless jam band mediocrity. I'm sure my frequent incoherent drunken rambles were equally annoying in their eyes...

It's illegal, immoral, and unhealthy, not to mention that it's probably not fun (unless you're a hippie.)

What's immoral or unhealthy about it?
Dude, it has more tar and carcinogens than even cigarettes.

Why don't I smoke? Random tests for work. Tends to happen often when you work in the Oil & Gas industry.

Marijuana use is way less carcinogenic than smoking cigarettes. There's not even a definitive answer as to whether pot causes cancer at all. I'm not saying smoking anything is good for you, but you can't just make crap up either.

certainly by filtering the smoke through water, smoking marijuana becomes less carcinogenic than walking down the street.

In my field, it does. Safety and liability is a top concern. If you have any position that requires you to visit site locations, you'll get tested often. I've been hit 5 times since I started.

Besides the invasion of privacy issue, I don't really see the relevance. Is a recreational pot smoker a less reliable worker than, say, a heavy drinker?

If you've been drinking, they will kick you off the site too. All the big gas and oil companies have very strict safety guidelines to follow. So if you want to be a part of the money train, you gotta follow the rules.

We have a few issues. There's safety during actual period of intoxication and then, there's checking to see what people have been doing on their own time. As far as I know there's isn't an alcohol test that can detect if somebody had a glass of wine last week, which is what urine weed tests are all about. And I'm not trying to be ugly, but I remember Andrew mentioning he does like to have a drink from time to time.
