I was honestly thinking this unironically. Or at lease planning some big joint event/discussing appointments with people.

Gretchen Whitmer would proba bly be the best of the short list, unless minority needs to be a box on a checklist. She'd drive the GOP almost as nuts as Harris, but present them with a much smaller "attack surface".  If I were Biden and wanting to play it safe, I'd announce simultaneously, Whitmer for VP, Harris for AG, and Rice [as] Secretary of State.

The idea of announcing some cabinet members before the election has been around for a while. Bush considered it in 2000, and Trump considered announcing some at the convention in 2016. Hell, Biden even mentioned considering it earlier this year.
As far as I can tell the only one who went through with it was Dewey in 1948, so make of that what you will.

8 EST seems reasonable — prime time on the east coast, quitting time on the west coast. Not totally unfathomable it could even come later, but the chances get real slim after like 9 EST.

Tbh, if Biden took this chance to drum up interest in the ticket, while establishing relationships his future Secretaries of Defence, State, Treasury etc, then he's got a far better sense for politics than 90% of the press (and most of this form) give him credit for.
