Why would there be so many ticket-splitters in this 2020?

That's strange. Montana getting a third congressional district before Idaho?

"Bush would've won if not for Ross Perot" has always struck me as obvious cope from Republicans, regardless of the many empirical problems with the claim.
Based on a poll I remembered that saw Perot's voters split 38-38 between Clinton and Bush, with 24% not voting. I kept this in mind and decided to tweak it so that, in states Clinton won by 10%, it is 67-9 Clinton, while in those he did not, it is 21-55 Bush. It evens out to 38-38 nationwide.

President George Bush (R-TX) / Vice President Dan Quayle (R-IN) - 274 EV / 46,649,040 (46.8%) PV
Goveror Bill Clinton (D-AR) / Senator Al Gore (D-TN) - 264 EV / 52,370,615 (52.5%) PV

Of course, it still wasn't enough to get Al Gore re-elected, but what are you gonna do?

That makes sense. Blame the writers of the new Quantum Leap for giving Leaper X the same name.

Matt Walsh is Roy Moore-level unelectable.
Yes, and it takes a perfect storm for him to be elected. The other two major contenders at the 2028 RNC (contested due to fact Trump dies after the primaries) were Nikki Haley and Tim Scott. Both would've won the NPV, and the electoral vote by more than 50 votes in North Carolina.

The above, but with an organic party system leading to it:

Biden's second term is more of the same. Trump runs again, but dies before the convention, which selects Matt Walsh after he proclaims "You cannot crucify mankind upon a cross of transgenderism."

Matt Walsh, as President, takes every fear any trans person has ever had of being genocided and does everything he can to make them reality. This kills the administration.

In 2033, with her supermajorities, somehow, President Zephyr manages to repeal the 19th amendment, allowing only trans women the right to vote, and the 23rd amendment, allowing DC to become a state and adding a large electoral prize for the popular vote. She also makes Puerto Rico a state.

In 2037, the Democratic Party, now comprising nearly 90% of eligible voters, fractured into two parties. The party's more moderate faction retained the name, and its more left-wing faction adopted the name "Socialist Party". White runs again, and an expy of Shaula runs under the new Populist label.

I shifted a few states around in hopes of making it a little more coherent while still maintaining the core structure of the map and the electoral college deadlock. I could go either way on if Massachusetts goes in my column or not, but I wanted a slightly more equal EV split, so...

Currently? A state representative from Montana. By 2032? She gets elected to Congress (either to the first district in 2026 or to the Senate in 2030).
